Altus Native Escapes VC After Nine Months as POW
Altus Oklahoma native Sgt. Kenneth R. Gregory, 23, survived nine months as a prisoner of the Viet Cong and was rescued after a helicopter spotted him near the Cambodian border. He had lost 10 pounds and was treated at the Long Binh hospital in good condition before returning home.

Memorial Holiday Traffic Deaths Seen 50 Percent Higher
The Memorial holiday weekend saw traffic fatalities running about 50 percent above the 1968 pace. A National Safety Council spokesman projected totals of 600 plus deaths for the 78 hour period, with a range of 550 to 650. California led with 31 deaths, followed by Michigan and Missouri with 20 each, Texas 18, New York and Ohio 16. Doswell Virginia witnessed the worst single accident with six killed. Galveston County Texas reported six dead in resort area crashes. Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, DC, Utah and Vermont reported no deaths.
