France faces a runoff between Georges Pompidou and Alain Poher after Pompidou led with 44.46 percent and Duclos trailed. Poher, with 23.31 percent, rejects calls to withdraw asserting he does not care about arithmetic.
Communist forces bombarded Saigon breaking a two week lull as U S and allied troops fought nearby. At least 150 guerrillas reported dead in weekend clashes. A 122mm rocket hit a residential area near downtown killing two civilians and wounding 25, including 15 children. A second rocket landed in the 9th district without damage.
Hubert H. Humphrey boosts earnings after leaving the White House through a publishing job, teaching at Minnesota campuses, a syndicated column, and speaking engagements. Estimates place his year income around $200,000 with fees and board chair duties supplementing his take.
May recorded 2.30 inches at the air field per FAA records, making it the wettest month of the year. The year to date total is 6.66 inches, behind the annual average of about 20 inches, with January the driest month at 0.12 inch.
United Press International reports a three day Memorial Day holiday interval ending Sunday 11:59 p.m. ET yielded 558 traffic fatalities along with 206 drownings 14 plane deaths and 64 miscellaneous for a total of 842 across all causes. California led with 50 traffic deaths Texas 38 Michigan 32 Ohio 30 Missouri 27 New York 28 Illinois 25 and North Carolina and Georgia 23 each. The National Safety Council had projected 550 to 650 traffic fatalities. City Council meets at 7:30 p.m. at city hall.
Dr. J. E. Shewbert reports no changes in pastorships for area Methodist churches after attending the Northwest Texas Methodist Conference in Lubbock. The gathering drew heavy youth attendance and featured Bishop Kenneth Pope of Dallas delivering key messages.
Post master General Winton M. Blount warned Congress must replace the current system with a corporate model to prevent a nationwide breakdown like the Chicago crisis. He cited last year’s Christmas pileups and said a nine member board would direct operations with rates set by a separate panel.
Joseph Payton Terrell 85 died at 3 15 a m at Shady Elm Nursing Home. Funeral services at 2 p m Tuesday at Newberry Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev Joe S Allen. Burial in Childress Cemetery. Survivors include two daughters six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He lived in Childress moving from Quinlan Texas in 1906 and worked at a service station Conoco and as a postal deliveryman before retirement.
The Cox Farr Post of the American Legion will elect officers at a meeting Tuesday night at 8 p.m. in the Veterans Building. Veterans Service Officer George Spear urged a full turnout from the membership.
Gov. Preston Smith warned the Texas legislature that despite adjournment at 3 p.m. it will likely be recalled this summer. He criticized last week's one-year 2.8 million appropriation bill as usurping his budgetary authority and forcing a special session to approve further funding.
Congress returns from Memorial Day as Warren E. Burger faces Senate Judiciary Committee scrutiny. Reies Lopez Tijerina threatens a citizen arrest over civil rights claims, Capitol police monitor but anticipate a calm hearing. Senate reaction appears cautious yet generally favorable.
The Supreme Court ruled that military personnel who commit crimes in American communities while off duty in peacetime must be tried in civilian courts. The majority, led by Justice Douglas, noted about 85 percent are already tried in civilian courts, while dissents claimed the ruling creates uncertainty in military law.
A presidential panel urged resuming oil production off California to prevent future spills. It proposed pumping the Union Oil Co. lease dry rather than sealing it and handed the findings to President Nixon for Interior Secretary Walter J. Hickel.

Mrs. Nannie B. Hankins eighty died about 1 15 p m today in the Coon Nursing Home Dalhart information received here The body will be brought overland to Childress and funeral arrangements announced by Newberry Funeral Home Survivors include son J W Hankins of Amarillo and daughter Mrs Daisy Alice Willingham of Paducah
Funeral services were held in Vernon for Wesley K. Truly 28 former resident who died Saturday afternoon after a weeklong illness. Graveside rites were to be held at 4 p m today in East View Cemetery in Vernon. He was born November 21 1940 in Vernon and worked as an electrical construction lineman for Frank Netherlin of Arlington. Survivors include his widow a son Wesley Truly of Dimmitt a daughter Tanya Truly of Jennings Oklahoma his parents and siblings and four steps.
