Dan Johnson of the Salvation Army explained the organization to members of the Childress Jaycee Club at today’s noon meeting. He described fundraising aims and praised past volunteers, noting a trip to the Salvation Army children's camp. The club voted to extend complimentary over time parking tickets for out of county motorists and planned two Christmas activities including donations for baskets to needy families.
Funeral rites for Martin A. Coyne prominent local business man were held at 2 p m at Central Christian Church with Rev Kenneth Jones officiating. Coyne a longtime resident died Wednesday after a lengthy illness pallbearers named Ben Pardue Christy Leach E E Kingbaum Ed Fleming of Graham W T Ross Dick Bell Stoney Jackson T A Russell of Abilene. Interment followed in Childress cemetery under Newberry Funeral Home direction.
Tyler attorneys reached a late Wednesday plan to shorten court records and speed an injunction hearing in the NAACP case. The NAACP seeks to move the hearing to Austin or Dallas for convenience, after losing rounds in Tyler. The state holds a temporary injunction. a permanent injunction hearing may follow if the plea is rejected.
Earl Preston will chair the Salvation Army fund raising drive in Childress County. The campaign runs December 11 to December 15, with worker appointments to be announced later. Preston, with Pres ton Clothing Store ties and Lions Club membership, said more details will follow.
County Attorney Charles Reynolds announced trial dates will be set Wednesday for three cases. Defendants include Delbert Leon Potts of Memphis charged with driving while intoxicated, Vernon Foster of Childress charged with DWI, and Billy Shawhart of Childress charged with possession of alcoholic beverages for sale in a dry county. Jury panel to be announced later this week.
U S marshals arrest the last of 16 segregationists charged with interfering with Clinton High School integration. Marion Nell Currier was taken at Clinton for arraignment as 6 defendants were arraigned and 10 others faced arraignment. The school was closed to quell violence and reopen Monday with 700 students and nine Negroes.
Stinnett Ratlers meet Merkel Badgers in Fair Park Stadium for a Class A state quarterfinal. Standout QBs Larry Dawson and Robert McLeod headline the battle, with Merkel boasting 11-1 record after a single loss to Winters. Ratlers arrive undefeated, fresh off a 33-6 playoff win over Clarendon.
An Arctic front stalled across Central Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle due to a moving low pressure system. Forecasters predict the front will push into the Panhandle and Red River Valley with freezing temperatures early Friday then move faster Friday night. Light drizzle was noted in Wichita Falls and nearby locations.
Vernon Goodwin of Paducah was found guilty as an accomplice to attempted arson in district court. He received a two year prison term and remains free on a 1500 dollar appeal bond while appealing to the Court of Criminal Appeals. Co defendants S C Stewart and Jack Nesbitt were arrested September 17 and charged with attempted arson. they confess, to be tried later. Raymond McClendon of Paducah was also charged as an accomplice. No witnesses testified for the defense.
The American Veterans of World War I organization sponsors a Monday night party for all World War I veterans and their families. Commander G F Sanders reports the event starts at 7:30 at the Veterans Building. Attendees from Childress County are invited for bingo rites entertainment and refreshments.
Two former American prisoners of war, Artie Pate and Aaron Wilson, arrived in Minneapolis with their families after leaving China. Mrs. Por n Howe, Alden, Minnesota, mother of Richard Tenneson who declined repatriation, greeted them discreetly on a Northwest Airlines flight. Wilson and Pate, weary and reticent, refused to discuss their past communism affiliations.
