A strong cold front moved into Texas bringing scattered showers and fog while temperatures fell sharply reaching 14 degrees in the Panhandle. Light snow was reported in the Panhandle Thursday night, with fog and drizzle elsewhere.
Reports from Washington London and Augusta suggest Winthrop Aldrich may retire as ambassador to Great Britain and President Eisenhower could name John Hay Whitney to succeed him. Whitney faces doubt from advisers while Christian Herter’s name is also raised as a potential London envoy, with both men likely to gain later administration roles.
Jesse Priest is reassigned to Childress as a Texas Department of Public Safety patrolman. He comes from Canyon and shares the station with Doug Howard, who moved from Tulsa. Priest has served since January 1, is married with two children, and lives at 509 Avenue G Nw.
A 600 mile per hour Snark intercontinental missile vanished after a test at Patrick Air Force Base Florida. The Defense Department said it escaped control at the turn around point and headed to an unknown destination with possible sightings over Brazil.
A test well planned on the Little Ranch in northwest Childress County will drill 5600 feet into the Ellenberger sand. The wildcat is a farm-out from Superior Oil and sits 660 feet from the north and east lines in the northeast quarter of Section 67, Block 9, H&GN survey. It will be named Smith Land and Cattle Company No 1. Driller and spud date were not announced.

Boy Scout Troop No. 61 will not meet tonight. All members are to report to the south side of Fair Park Stadium at 5 45 PM to assist as ushers for the Stinnett Merkel game tonight.
In Houston American Legion national commander W C Dan Daniel urged ousting Russia from the United Nations and warned that crossing lines would invite clobbering. He called for dismantling UN agencies like UNESCO and the World Labor Organization while proposing a strong U S nuclear buildup and an international police force under UN direction.
Childress hosts the All-District 3AA banquet on Monday January 21 with Perryton as the district winner this year. Bennett Goodloe Wellington superintendent elected district chairman. Maxie McKnight Wellington High principal named secretary. The event marks Childress hosting honors for the first time since three years ago when the district title was won there.
Houston South Texas political boss George Parr was called the mastermind behind evil doing as the government closes a five week trial against Parr and eight associates for alleged mail fraud involving Benavides Independent School District. Assistant U S Attorney Edward Bottler argued Parr directed fictitious work and checks to fake workers, with Parr counter-signing to skim funds. The government says the close-knit group defrauded taxpayers of about $190 000 through misused district funds and personal expenses.
The USS New Jersey a 45000 ton battleship will be decommissioned early next year and placed in mothballs. It will leave Norfolk for the New York Naval shipyard for a five month process then go to Bayonne. The move leaves only the Wisconsin and the Iowa as active battleships used for midshipman training cruises.
