French voters go to the polls in a presidential contest that could extend Charles de Gaulle’s hold on power. With over 28 million eligible, turnout was expected around 85 percent amid last minute polls showing eroding support for the 75-year-old leader who guided France through wartime resistance and postwar reforms.
Vatican City UPI Francis Cardinal Spellman of New York chaired a late push against the Ecumenical Council's nuclear stockpiling condemnation joined by ten archbishops including three Americans. Cardinal Shehan initially circulated the letter but then voted for condemnation saying he acted in haste. The letter urged bishops to oppose the condemnation criticizing it as a challenge to American nuclear policy.
Funeral services for William Ellis Russell 63 of Saginaw held at Shannon's Memorial Chapel. He died Tuesday morning in Saginaw. An inspector for the Liquor Control Board and member of the First Baptist Church. Survived by widow Reba. sons Robert Ray William Ellis Jr and Howard Lee. James Henry Parker. daughter Hazel Ransom. sisters Mrs Roy Palmer and Mrs J W Teague. six grandchildren.
The Iowa Park Hawks defeated Fredericksburg 42 to 13 in Abilene last night, advancing to the semi finals.
Those planning to buy water from the Red River Valley Authority and residents north and east of Childress are invited to a Monday night meeting at the courthouse. The session starts at 7 00 p m. Fred Parkey of Wichita Falls, who runs the Red River Authority, will attend. The Authority plans to buy water from the Green Belt Municipal and Industrial Water Authority when available.
A bale of cotton burned at the Farmers Cooperative Gin as firefighters responded to an alarm sounding at 6 05 p m. The fire department reported part of the bale was consumed in the blaze.
Gemini 7 astronauts Frank Borman and James Lovell report a puzzling mishap when a tape like object struck the right window on its third orbit after liftoff from Cape Kennedy. Paul Haney calls the incident a notable anomaly as Gemini 6 readies for a rendezvous nine days later.
Texas judges urged payment of this year's poll tax before the January 31 deadline to avoid affecting voting next year. The trial before Circuit Judge John R. Brown, Dist. Judge Adrian Spears, and Judge Homer Thornberry centered on timing and potential Supreme Court review. The case, under the 1965 voting rights act, is headed for appeal to the U S Supreme Court with no clear January ruling expected.
Funeral services for Mrs. Rutie H. Worsham 421 North Dwight Pampa were held 2 p m Saturday at the First Baptist Church Pampa with Dr Douglas Carver and Rev Leo McMahan officiating. Burial followed in Alanreed Cemetery. She died Thursday morning in Groom Memorial Hospital wife of R H Worsham. The couple married October 1 1910 in Knox County and lived in Fort Worth 1930 Alanreed 1933 Fort Worth 1935 then moved to Pampa in 1956.
At Pack 63 Cub Scouts monthly meeting in First Methodist Church assistant Cubmaster Billy Harris presented Bear Badges and Gold Arrow to Danny Russell Dan Jones Chuck Baker and Terry Barley Carl Smith received a one year pin and Round-Up Badge Russell Stone Mike Proffitt Billy Harris and Roger Speir Denner Bers were also named Cubmasters Charles Baker led a uniform inspection. The Cubs offered a Thanksgiving play and skits about television commercials.
Duane Earl Pope 22, a McPherson College football star, was sentenced to death for the 1 500 bank robbery slayings of three in Big Springs Nebraska. A new trial motion is planned citing numerous legal errors. Pope awaits execution March 3 at 11 30 a m in the Nebraska Penitentiary. The Rev Charles Wretling reports Pope asked for the Sermon on the Mount to be read.
Funeral services for Mrs. Annie Nelson of Long Beach California will be held at 10 am Monday in Newberry Chapel conducted by Rev. Leslie E. Ellison pastor of First Presbyterian Church. Interment will be in Childress Cemetery. The body arrives from Amarillo by plane at 5 pm Sunday and will lie in state at Newbery’s until services. Survivors include daughter Mrs H A Schluter grandson Nelson Schluter and great grandchildren Johnny Laura Barbara Schluter of Houston and former daughter in law Mrs Orain Orcutt of Estelline.
Reports say Vietnamese intelligence warned American authorities of a Communist bombing plan targeting the Metropole bachelor enlisted men's billet and dispensary in Saigon. The blast killed 11 total and wounded over 170, with civilians among the casualties. One New Zealand soldier and several Vietnamese civilians were injured or killed.
The Organization of African Unity ministers, meeting in Addis Ababa, discussed concrete steps to topple Rhodesia’s white regime if Britain does not act by December 15. They planned stepped-up aid to Rhodesian nationalist groups, including money, arms, and training, while protesters urged decisive action.

Two large airliners Eastern and Trans World collided near North Salem New York 30 miles from New York City. One plane crashed on Hunt Mountain bursting into flames, eight to ten people believed killed. About 111 aboard total. dozens injured and taken to Danbury Brewster and Mt. Kisco hospitals as the other jet limped to an airport with a wing damaged.
The 1966 Spelling Bee books have arrived at the Childress Office Supply and may be picked up at cost of 15 cents each. Supt. J. W. Hamilton will again serve as Bee director of Childress County. The winner advances to the Regional Bee in Amarillo.
