John Pyle of Hedley will preside over the District 13 VFW convention in the Veterans Building, Childress, on Saturday and Sunday. A Navy veteran from 1952 to 1956, he earned the Korean Service and China Service medals and has been active in VFW since 1962. Last year he was named All-State Post Commander of Texas and he belongs to Elks Lodge 1113 and the American Legion.

Starter of Riot Fined 250 For Interfering With Police
Mrs. Rena Frye 49 was fined 25 dollars with 10 monthly installments for interfering with a police officer during August rioting. A 30 day jail term was suspended and she received two years probation. Her appeal was noted by attorneys A L Wirin and Stanley Malone. The case involved her son Marquette 21 and brother Ronald 92. both were arrested for interfering during the arrest of Marquette.

Tornado Like Winds Hit Houston Area and Floods Rise
Severe weather slammed Pearland and the Houston metro area with high winds and over two inches of rain. Seven light planes were damaged at the local airport, bridges and roads flooded, and several deaths were reported across Texas, including an Orange optometrist and a San Antonio ranch hand. Episcopal Bishop Anson Phelps Stokes Jr. withdrew from the awards panel saying he respected the rabbi s right to protest but felt the action necessary. Cardinal Richard Cushing said he would accept the award, while the rabbi was among 58 sponsors of the Washington march.

Former Resident Annie Nelson Dies in California
Annie Nelson of Long Beach died Thursday morning in a Long Beach hospital. She was the former resident of Childress, mother of the late Elmer A. Nelson, widow of N. Nelson, who died in 1907. She moved from Fort Worth to Childress in 1905, then to Long Beach in 1936. Surviving are daughter Mrs H A Schluter of Houston and grandchildren Johnny, Laura, and Barbara Schluter. Funeral arrangements are pending.
