A regular city council meeting discussed a proposed Childress filtering plant costing over 260000. Engineers and bonding representatives answered questions while City Manager Joe Howard was authorized to visit Texas A M College to study a new low cost filtering setup. No action was taken.
The Houston city council found Mayor Roy Hofheinz guilty of five counts of misconduct but did not impeach. They issued a formal censure and suspended him earlier, noting his unwarranted conduct. An election schedule issue prevented immediate removal.
The 12 year old Billy Ray Merrill, son of Mr and Mrs Y B Merrill, is described as critical at Plainview Polio Clinic where he is a patient. He has polio and developed sleeping sickness. Another Merrill child, Sharon Kay, was admitted to Childress General Hospital yesterday. she was not believed to have polio.
President Eisenhower pledged the full facilities of the federal government for flood relief and said he would call a special session if needed. At Bradley Field he met governors from six states and Red Cross officials to discuss funding, with an estimated $75 million required.
A C 119 Flying Boxcar crashed during takeoff from Charleston Air Force Base into a North Charleston residential area. At least nine people were killed, including five airmen and four civilians, with several others missing. Four civilians occupied three destroyed houses.
Light showers fell over Texas with isolated thundershowers possible in the Red River Valley Panhandle and far West Texas after noon and evening. Amarillo logged .54 inch and Presidio .15 inch in the last 24 hours while highs ranged from 102 at Mineral Wells to 87 at Alpine and El Paso.
Tennessee Governor Frank Clement orders a three way investigation into a freight train collided with a Spring City school bus killing 10 children and injuring 30. He will meet with bereaved parents and attend hospitals in four towns as the town mourns the tragedy.
Mrs. M. J. Earp injured yesterday in a two car crash near Kirkland was reported improved at Childress General Hospital this afternoon. She suffered a broken collar bone and broken ribs along with bruises and abrasions. Her baby son Danny Charles Earp was admitted with minor bruises.
Governor Allan Shivers says no current need for a special legislative session over school segregation. He notes a Big Spring court case starting Friday could influence any decision and declines to comment on potential funding to integrated districts.
About 40 000 CIO United Auto Workers members walked out at 18 International Harvester Co plants across six states. The official walkout began at 12 01 a m as a five year pact expired, with almost 30 000 already striking at nine plants. Negotiations continued after the deadline, with no violence reported as picket lines formed. The strike follows a rejected 10 cent hourly wage offer and a guaranteed annual wage plan.
A fund drive sponsored by the Childress Fire Department association and the Jaycee Club launches this week to purchase a resuscitator on display at Watkins Inc. Rowden Cordell calls it a life saving machine available to all citizens at no cost, to be operated by fire department staff, doctors, and trained Jaycees. The total cost is $630 for the device and maintenance.
DE Interviews set for junior and senior high students wishing to take Distributive Education this year will be given by Coordinator A P Wright from 10 a m until 12 noon on Wednesday and Thursday. Students may contact Wright at the high school gym during those hours.
French Army forces and tank aided by Vampire jets launched a broad offensive along a 65 mile front into the Khenifra and Khouribga region southeast of Casablanca. Rebels from Berber tribes resisted as French units encircled the territory and targeted villages around Khouribga and Oued Zam. In Algeria, French troops carried out dawn attacks destroying nine rebel villages as part of the same crackdown.
About 100 inmates at the Nebraska reformatory rioted to hide an escape plan but the two escapees were captured. The rioters were stripped and confined in the reformatories jail, following recent prison uprisings and a major fire at the penitentiary. Superintendent George Morris says the rioters will be released from the hole when they choose to behave.
The UN section in Korea completed a dramatic no man’s land exchange near a bombed bridge. Lt. Guy H. Bumpass, wounded with a fractured skull, was returned first to a waiting helicopter and sent to Ascom City hospital after delivering the body of Army Capt. Charles W. Brown of West Louisville, Ky.
District Judge Luther Gribble upheld the Childress County Commissioners Court action to re district the county early this year. L A Lake Sachse former Precinct 3 commissioner alleged illegal removal from office and that redistricting was to oust him. A second suit over a $5000 motor grader dispute was postponed to September 27.
