Advises Removal of Buttons From Citrus to Prevent Decay
Charles W. Irrgang, manager of the Fruit Auction Sales Company, reports from Chicago that Dr. Winston of the Department of Agriculture recommends Florida growers remove buttons from all grapefruit and oranges during packing. Tests show stem decay is negligible without buttons, while borax dips have protected the fruit’s stem end for years. Irrgang says the finding benefits buyers and retailers by improving fruit quality and marketability.
