The late onion crop is now estimated at 11,604,000 100 pound sacks, 14 percent above 1936 and 21 percent above the 1928-32 five year average. Conditions in onion districts improved since August 1, with the 1937 forecast indicating a larger crop. Page 14 continuation.
Monte Vista Colorado September 18 The Triumph potato harvest in San Luis Valley is nearly finished with only a few late planted cars left. Red McClure and Brown Beauty crops are gaining speed and will increase after the first heavy frost. Triumph yieds exceeded early estimates with fields yielding 175 to 225 sacks versus 90 to 100 in past years. Late Red McClure and Brown Beauty crops dug so far show better results than expected.
The Produce Packer Guide from The Packer edition presents a weekly newspaper format for commercial production and marketing of fruits and vegetables. It notes a separate weekly newspaper The Produce Packer carrying market and trade news for shippers of eggs poultry butter hides wool fur. A free sample copy can be mailed upon request.

If no agreement is reached between shipping lines and labor unions, a heavy movement of western fruit to European markets may be disrupted, worsening the already tight refrigerated space on steamers.
William L. Wagner secretary of the Western Fruit Jobbers Association will leave Monday for an extended western tour. He will be joined by George A. Marsh president of St. Louis. They plan stops in Denver Salt Lake City Idaho and the Pacific coast including California and Phoenix Ariz on return.
The Department of Agriculture reports the Danish late cabbage crop at 210,300 tons, down 16 percent from last year and 24 percent below the five year average, with domestic late crop at 176,500 tons down 43 percent from last year. Idaho Falls reports two killing frosts in the upper Snake River valley this week, one on September 14 and a second the next night. Potato vines were killed, likely curbing yield as late plantings lagged. Early digs show excellent quality and hope for strong later crops.
The annual convention of the Canadian Fruit and Vegetable Jobbers Association will meet in Montreal at the Windsor hotel from January 21 to 23. L F Burrows secretary treasurer announced the event.

Trading in rights ceased September 10 after the futures calls closed. suits challenging the act were dismissed as the act was already ruled constitutional.
The first annual Exposition of the International Horticultural Exposition opened in Chicago last Saturday at the International Amphitheatre, Stock Yards. It showcases fruits vegetables and flowers from across the country with strong attendance and interest. The National League of Wholesale Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Distributors sponsors a centerpiece golden cornucopia twelve feet long and 36 feet wide, drawing crowds daily as part of a wide range of spectacular and educational exhibits.
The Interstate Commerce Commission ordered a suspension of planned rail refrigeration and icing rate increases that were to start September 10. The move follows a Federal Court restraining order benefiting certain poultry butter egg and cheese shippers and trade groups. The ICC decision makes the suspension general and requires carriers to reestablish former charges only after notice and posting.
Local exporters and European buyers welcome lower rates for Florida citrus via New York. From Jacksonville to UK ports the price drops to 1.00 per box, down from 1.21. Tampa to UK falls to 1.10 per box, Jacksonville to French and other continental ports set at 1.15. Rates apply from Florida origins to New York for transatlantic sailings.
Grand Forks North Dakota reports show light potato diggings this week and a likely yield no more than 50 percent of last year in the Red River valley. Most farmers plan digging by mid next week and fear a late freeze. crop overall three to four weeks late with limited shipments so far.
W M O Keefe executive secretary of the Association of Refrigerated Warehouses with offices in Chicago left Wednesday for Atlantic City to attend the North Atlantic Chapter meeting at the Ambassador hotel September 13 to 20 After the meeting he plans several days in New York before returning to Chicago.
A Chicago sub-committee of the Association of Refrigerated Warehouses debated launching an industry stabilization movement. Attendees included G. F. Nieman of Union Cold Storage Pittsburgh H. Co. Kuehn of Wisconsin Cold Storage Milwaukee F. D. Newell of Minneapolis Cold Storage and H. L. Trask of United States Cold Storage Kansas City along with Chicago warehouse reps. A full committee meeting is set for October 12 at the Hotel Sherman during the National Poultry Butter and Egg Association convention.
Jacksonville Fla Sept 18 Veget able growers in Florida press ahead with fall crops. Acreage expected to exceed last year with early shipments possible if weather stays favorable. Lower east coast and Lake Okeechobee regions lead in tomatoes beans and cabbage while other counties plan hundreds of acres. Expressions note ample plant supply but dry spells hurt stands and timing targets include eggplants near Oct 1 and carrots by Oct 15. South Dade and Plant City areas anticipate sizable potato and strawberry activity respectively.
In Rockland County New York leading fruit growers warn the fall apple crop and late tomato and cabbage harvests are at risk as WPA workers refuse to quit jobs for temporary field work. County farm agent George Clark says about 200 men are needed now to harvest within a week or two to prevent profit loss. Russell McCarthy of the National Reemployment Service for the county is pressed to recruit additional workers who will leave WPA employment for farm labor. The wage and hour differences and winter tenure keep workers in industrial jobs.
Funeral services for Henry Lorber were held Sunday at Congregation B n ai Jehudah in Kansas City with Rabbi Samuel B Mayerberg officiating. Interment followed in Rose Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers included William F Garfitt and John R Baldwin among others. many friends and produce men attended. A second note states D I Adams of Kansas City, head of the American Warehousemen's Association, planned to arrive in Chicago to choose headquarters for the association's February 1937 convention.
Salinas California September 18 After an eleven day shutdown due to a shed workers strike lettuce shipments resumed this week as shippers farmers and townspeople unite to keep the harvest going in the Salinas Watsonville district. About 40 cars shipped Tuesday 48 Wednesday and an estimated 60 cars for the day late Thursday. Community support remains strong despite strikers demands for a closed shop with observers noting a shift from concession to business focus as harvest continues. Packing at fenced sheds and scattered areas increased with Los Angeles facilities aiding in the crisis.
