Greeley Colorado December 14 J H Waolt president of the Rothschild Protee Company and former Colorado Perishable Ship pers Association leader warns against freight rate increases for vegetables and fruit claiming no quantity moves justify such costs. He calls current perishables freight rates disastrous and notes shippers face rapid business loss under present conditions with no relief in sight.
San Francisco December 24 The Western special train to New Orleans will depart from San Francisco Thursday evening January 6 at 8 o'clock instead of the morning. It will reach Los Angeles and spend January 7 there before continuing on. Reservations are pouring in and a record turnout from the West Coast is anticipated.
New York Dec 24 The Western Union Telegraph Company and the Postal Telegraph Company will ask the Federal Communications Commission for a 15 percent rate increase following railroads. The move would be the first rise in 20 years except during World War II government operation.
California citrus interests prepare to oppose a proposed freight rate increase to be heard January 11 in Los Angeles. Fred Fiteatbhon of Mutual Orange Distributors says current rates yield railroads a large profit, while Paul Armstrong of the Exchange argues the hike would cost California and Arizona growers millions in a normal year. The opposition groups, including shippers and organizations, note citrus travels about 2,600 miles from grower to consumer.
