California Fall Pea Deal Nearing End This Week
California fall pea shipments from the Imperial valley and Ivanhoe Delano districts declined this week. Imperial shipments dropped from as high as 12 cars daily to four to six cars starting Monday, with only scattered cars moving from central California. Yields were light, and by Wednesday the district had shipped about 380 cars, signaling an imminent finish.

Stockton Calif Dec 17 with shippers estimating not more than 800 cars of celery remained in the Delta region after mid week and about 300 would not move until after January 1 the deal appeared to have passed its peak and shipments would decline for the rest of the season. F o b market mid week was 1 75 a half crate quality excellent with stalks and tops in good condition. Imperial Valley Lettuce Deal Gains Headway
Brawley Calif December 17 Loadings of Iceberg lettuce have risen this week with shipments reaching 26 cars on Tuesday and expected 40 to 50 cars daily next week. Sizes are large mostly fours and fives with few sixes. Quality is good and well colored with solid heads grading 81 percent U S No 1 or better. Some shippers loading this week others to start early next week signaling a broad start to the season. Heat losses may reach 25 percent in early fields while later plantings show good prospects for production.
Revised Schedule of Hearings on 15 Percent Freight Increase
The Interstate Commerce Commission will hear a motion filed December 9 seeking immediate rail rate increases. William L. Wagner of the United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association notes opposition from various interests and warns the proposed 15 per cent rise could hurt farmers and push traffic to water and motor transport. Cuban tomatoes steady amid heavy offerings on market
New York December 17 The Cuban tomato market remained steady despite large arrivals for Monday and Wednesday sales. Over 80 000 lugs reached port last week with high prices for fancy stock. Monday offerings 48 1230 lugs and prices held near prior sale levels. Wednesday sales heavy to small sizes caused price dips, few large fancy items held at about 4.60 to 4.80 per lug, smaller and poorer grades trended lower. A Cuban ruling limits shipments below seven by seven size to curb smalls. Local distributors hope careful grading maintains current price levels.
