Initial Baldwin County Alabama potato shipments are planned for late this week with movement running through mid June. Weather has been favorable, prospects for size and quality are excellent, and total 1938 Baldwin shipments were about 4,800 units by rail and truck, signaling a strong season ahead.
Washington April 21 Secretary of Agriculture Henry A Wallace said Rochester New York will be the first of six cities to start the new food stamp plan to move surplus farm products through ordinary trade channels. Operation expected within 30 days. The plan aims to boost purchasing power of low income families by distributing surpluses via wholesale and retail grocery outlets during an experimental period.
J J De Maria, president of DeMaria and Janssen, Inc., sells his interest to L O Schneeberger and will run the fruit and vegetable business under his own name in the new Kansas City Kan terminal market this fall. Chicago April 21 The advisory board of the United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association selected William Garfitt as successor to William L Wagner who resigned last month Garfitt will assume office around April 24 He has long ties to the industry including former secretary of the Western Fruit Jobbers Association and current vice president of Standard Fruit and Steamship Company The board unanimously praised Wagner for seven years of service and arranged a cash bonus as a token of appreciation
April 1 Harlingen Texas reports a slow start to the spring tomato deal with production expected to fall short of early estimates. Despite large acreage, drought, dry spells, scant rain, and long high winds hurt progress. Irrigation water is mineral rich. blooms whipped by winds delaying shipments until mid May though plants remain healthy overall.
Gainesville Florida April 1 Federal Judge A V Long this week dissolved the temporary injunction last week banning Luther T Johnson a citrus shipper from shipping citrus pulp from the state without the citrus fade a tampa tax and advertising assessments He was allowed to resume shipments and order was dissolved due to notice and ineligible parties and lack of sufficient allegations in the bill of complaint The judge said the remedies sought were excessive and the current methods too burdensome for Johnson and the grove interests
In Los Angeles April 21 shipments from Venice district will stay steady but light until about May 1 when about 20 cars per day are expected. Last May’s total of 657 cars aids near-term outlook. this season may see around 1,200 interstate cars with production about twice that, as acreage and demand shift toward Utah or green types.
New Orleans April 21 The Louisiana Irish potato movement is trimmed to about 3000 cars due to drought and frost damage. Southern parishes Terrebonne LaFourche forecast around 765 cars from an initial 1020. New Roads Alexandria and north Louisiana report better progress with normal statewide yields expected. Potatoes are federally and state inspected and packed in 50 and 100 pound bags.
Rush work on Platform 60 at the Pennsylvania Produce Terminal in Philadelphia aims to be completed by May 1. A route map for shippers is being prepared and distributed soon as 13 of 40 spaces are reserved by firms including S. S. Darmon Co, F. D. Wilson, I. Meltzer, F. O. Urle & Co, J. C. Moritz & Bros, H. Augusta April 21. For the second time in a week the state Senate rejected a House proposal to levy a tax on chain stores doing business in Maine.
The Louisiana Farmers Protective Association and Ellis M Jenkins filed in Little Rock a federal lawsuit seeking 8.33 million dollars against Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company Atlantic Commission Company Kroger Wesco Safeway and Tiway alleging violations of the Robinson Patman Act and unlawful below cost interstate sales tending to create a monopoly. James H Morrison traveled from Hammond to file the suit which names the defendants and cites Sherman and Clayton antitrust laws.
From Hazlehurst, April 21, English peas still move in moderate volume from Copiah county, but cabbage leads. Forty nine cars shipped Monday April 17 as early quality improves toward May 1. Cold weather slowed heading yet vitality and moisture promise exceptional yield and better than average quality. Demand remains strong. Copenhagen cuttings growing, with Golden round initial shipments. Acreage spread across growth stages, season to extend through the period.
Kansas City reports show chain stores offering Louisiana strawberries at 23c and 25c per two boxes while an independently owned store advertises “Fan cy Louisiana Strawberries” at 10c per box. Government notes market steady with 24 pint crates around 2.75 to 2.85, while independents claim 2.40 per crate in retail equivalents.
Kansas City April 21 Old potato markets show continued rise with Idaho Russets quoted 20 to 26 cents higher than last week. Maine and Idaho sources remain firm at higher f o b quotations as growers hold firm on remaining stocks.

Bakersfield report shows Edison long white potato shipments surging ahead of schedule. Estimated 50 to 60 cars daily this week, with next week likely to exceed 100 cars per day. Charleston April 21 a new state law approved by the Governor imposes a license fee on hawkers and peddlers. It targets itinerant truck peddlers of fruits and produce entering from other states with a scale from 15 for smallest trucks to 450 for five ton capacity and larger, plus 100 for each additional ton over two.
A privilege tax on wholesale fruit and vegetable dealers in Tennessee, including brokers and commission merchants, was enacted by the legislature and approved by Governor Prentice Cooper. Rates range from $10 in small counties to $200 in large ones, with Memphis affected by the top tier. The law authorizes counties and municipalities to assess the tax.
Potato digging will start in Louisiana by Monday April 24. Several cars have already been shipped. Drought has affected some areas. Early sections include New Roads Opelousas Houma Raceland Thibodaux and Lockport.
Washington will enforce the Unfair Practices Act known as the loss leader law on June 7. It forbids selling below cost to injure competitors or using a product as a loss leader in a way that harms competition.
