Fort Russell authorities report the 316th cavalry will reach war strength of about 1600 men within two weeks. A full cavalry regiment will join one squadron of the 12th cavalry stationed there. Barracks are prepared and equipment repaired as the post stays ready for the incremental arrival.

British Y M C A war work secretary Marty Lown reported huts at a western camp leveled by a hall fire. An estimated twenty four huts were destroyed in the blaze, with damage blamed on the incident.

London May 18 Experiments in making paper from sawdust first undertaken in 1810 have been revived. Difficulties in converting sawdust into wood pulp are overcome and the supply now appears sufficient. A plant in Scotland has started to produce 260 tons of newsprint weekly from sawdust and the process will be extended to other mills.
A Japanese Diet delegation will visit Chin, Manchuria and Baria of Siberia to observe conditions. Parkin and Wladivortock are named stops. The trip aims to assess risks to Japanese interests amid potential mobilization and regional tensions.
