The Atlantic transport Minnehaha en route to London from New York is fighting a fire in No 3 hold with a cargo of about 15 000 tons including ammunition. The captain said the blaze is not serious and the ship is about 70 miles southeast of Halifax, with the crew around 100 and plans to return to Halifax.
Secretary Daniels announced the government will take over the Sayville radio station for neutrality violation proof. Captain Bullard will assume control under the August 5 order directing government seizure of high powered transatlantic stations.
Beatrice banker Hugo W. Ahlquist commends the Beatrice Chautauqua program praising performers from the Hawkeye Glee Club to the California Players. He notes the lectures by Dr. Fox and Major DeHull N. Travis impressed Beatrice audiences and calls the season a exceptional entertainment value.
London reports the Italian cruiser Amalfi torpedoed in the upper Adriatic by an Austrian submarine. Most of the crew were saved, marking a significant early war loss for Italy as Austria expands its submarine fleet at Pola. Other fronts note Russian and German movements and continued western fighting.
London July reports quote a Times Petrograd correspondent saying all passenger traffic on German railways has been suspended. Private reports suggest large forces are moving from the eastern front to the western front in anticipation of a possible rush on Calais.
In New York Harry Thaw rose from his chair and challenged Deputy Attorney General Cook to state on the record that he believed the alleged thirty fourth street rooming house whip beat stories. A 16 minute dispute followed as the state questioned Thaw about the jeweled whip beatings. The witness faced sharp grilling and spectators edged forward in anticipation of a possible confrontation.
The Colorado Supreme Court denied an application to stop Judge Granby Hillyer from ruling on John R. Lawson’s motion for a new trial. Lawson, a United Mine Workers board member, was convicted of murder for leading striking miners in a deadly clash with state troops and sentenced to life imprisonment. The ruling allows Hillyer to proceed with the new trial motions, with potential appeal later.
An auto driven by a Japanese boy from Oakley struck two little boys Vaughn and Billie Wade as they were near a cart and engaged on a culvert incline at Hemmerepr Wyoming. Passersby M Whitney and R Rose aided the injured youths. Doctors Staff ford and Hocker treated the unconscious children. The car was damaged but the fate of the boys remains uncertain.
A night storm felled trees and toppled spires in Cincinnati and northern Kentucky. About twenty two people are dead or missing and property damage exceeds a million dollars in Cincinnati alone. Steamboats sank on the Ohio River and services stopped as crews survey the wreckage.
Rudolf Robert reports from Bucharest that Roumania delays action as its war party doubts Entente calculations on defeating the Central Powers. They remain unsure Russia will mobilize reserves to shift the balance.
El Paso dispatch reports General Victoriano Huerta refusing any compromise that would restrict his liberty. He states he will only leave jail unconditionally, insisting he has done nothing wrong and honored his bond.

The Cheyenne Frontier boosters arrived in Fort Collins at 7 56 pm after leaving Cheyenne in four autos the party including R N LaFontaine mayor Dan Barkedale and others The group then traveled to Boulder for a noon arrival and banquet at Hotel Boulderado before continuing to Fort Collins for a banquet at the Northern hotel with local business leaders The boosters planned brief stops at Berthoud Loveland and Cliveley and will proceed toward Cheyenne highway towns with further visits tomorrow morning
In Holycomb in July King John Spangler, 24, slashed his sweetheart Monell Gates, 15, with a knife when she refused to attend a Fourth of July celebration. A farmhand who followed to Gates home joined in a confrontation, resulting in the killer ending his own life with the same weapon.
