Berlin reports German chancellor von Bethmann Hollweg defended Germany’s wartime actions and urged creation of a league of nations. He said peace must be guided by justice, warned against exploiting the defeated, and acknowledged Germany’s errors in Alsace Lorraine and pan Germanism.
In an important evening session the Colored Circle League will host a meeting this eve. Speaker Jack Brushmood will discuss the influenza epidemic and its impact. Attendance is expected to be unusually large at 15 cents admission.
The monarchist movement in Portugal appears to gain momentum with a royalist proclamation read before the garrison at Balenca do Minho. The republican flag was burned, and the monarchial banner hoisted in its place. London reports the Evening News cites Portuguese authorities that former leaders may be ready to return if the people wish.
Senator John B. Kendrick spoke before livestock leaders in Denver urging action on meat packing abuses. He cited a 1890 senate report and federal trade commission findings alleging control by the five big packers over prices to producers and consumers.

The 1600 pound steer sold to a buyer who paid 27 1/2 cents per pound for the grand champion car load from KE M Reinsmith of Centennial Wyoming. Robinson & Co. conducted the sale. the car load averaged 1436 pounds and about 304.90 dollars per head.
Paris dispatch reports Italian delegates met with General Diaz to discuss Italy’s ambitions from diplomatic and military angles. They emphasize securing the Brenner Pass and Dalmatian coast including Cara and Sebenico to control the Adriatic and protect central Italy’s coastline.
