Income tax reshapes labor ranks and wages in New York
New York tax chief William H Edwards says high wages push many workers formerly seen as lower income into the tax paying class. Longshoremen garment workers and entertainment staff now report earnings up to several thousand dollars a year, and collectors cite stories of waiters and bellboys paying taxes. The year’s rate is lower but filing deadlines remain strict with penalties for delinquency. Edwards notes New York’s Second and Third districts contribute over a quarter of U S tax receipts.
