Los Angeles February 2. Defense witnesses testified that Jacob Denton appeared alive after June 2 1920, the date of the claimed murder by Louise L. Peete. Affidavits and letters were introduced as the defense opened its case in the Peete murder trial.
The Commerce Department reports record foreign trade for 1920 driven by higher freight to Germany, South America, the Orient, the West Indies and North America. Exports to Britain, France and Italy dropped while those nations increased shipments to the U S. Trade with Brazil Argentina Chile and Uruguay totaled about 1 044 billion with exports up over 100 million and imports up about 25 million for a 587 million total.
Indianapolis report says the American Legion will pursue the man who aided Grover Bergdoll's escape to Germany. Lemuel Bolles, national adjutant, notes press claims that Bergdoll obtained a Winnipeg passport using an American button and army discharge papers of a legionary.
February 2 nation debate on disarmament and military policy. President-Elect Harding favors a regular army of 175000 and voluntary training for 1500000 men annually while General Pershing warns against pacifism and unpreparedness but supports a world disarmament conference.
