Washington May 2 Arthur Donner treasurer of the American Sugar and Refining company testified before the senate committee on relations with Cuba. Donner said the trust had purchased 93000 tons of Cuban sugar this year with 45000 tons still there. Chairman Platt showed the War department figure of 3500 tons and Donner could not explain the gap. The trust had made advances to Cuban planters but they showed no interest in forwarding the Cuban sugar tariff. The trust owned no sugar lands in Cuba though individual stockholders might.

The will of J Sterling Morton was opened in Nebraska City. The estate is valued at 190000 dollars and will be divided among his four sons after providing an annuity for Emma Morton his sister.
Reports say C F Neeley, sentenced to seventeen years and a $56000 fine for post office frauds, lives in Havana prison with meals from a club and a furnished cell. He runs the brick yard business from jail and expects a pardon from the new Cuban government amid Havana's building boom.
A Montreal telegram reports Canadian Pacific purchases the Ottawa Northern and Western road for 4 million dollars. The deal shortens the transcontinental line by over thirty miles and provides improved trackage and facilities.
