Washington May 2 The president plans a quieter season at Deer Park Va as Mrs Roosevelt and children depart. The White House will be less socially active with entertainments paused and autumn return planned, while other prominent hostesses also prepare early vacations.
Senator Gibson read a commissioner letter opposing a public land leasing bill. Herman warns most lands west of the Mississippi could be leased and sales limited under homestead and mineral laws. Naphen seeks interior rent details amid allegations of land leases to meat trust members. Foster pushes a bill to place all livestock on the free list.
London May 3 The divorce bill by Earl Russell was rejected in the house of lords. It proposed divorce on five grounds beyond England's existing causes. Lord Halabury condemned the measure as an assault on marriage and urged its defeat.
Eric Johnson plunged eighty feet down a mine shaft at Camp Bird in Ouray Colorado. He was carried out with a drilling machine but suffered no broken bones or internal injuries and is expected to recover soon.
Washington May 3 The House will take up the omnibus bill admitting Oklahoma Arizona and New Mexico to statehood after District of Columbia business. Republicans oppose fearing two territories would send Democrats to the Senate but the measure is on the GOP platform and expected to pass the House. The Senate may delay it. Other bills include issuing passports to insular residents and coinage of subsidiary silver coins. Senate discussions include Spooner Lodge and Foraker on the Philippine bill.
May 3 Chicago attorney Lewis Mitchell aged sixty was shot dead at his desk by Robert Bremer. Bremer, also sixty, arrested after Mrs Bremer had sought help from Mitchell over marital troubles and Bremer accused him of courting her.
London May 3 The Pall Mall Gazette reports W K Vanderbilt offered 100000 dollars for the record breaking fil Sceptre which won the two big races at Newmarket this week. The owner R A Sevier declined the offer.
Cripple Creek Colorado May 3 The run on the Bibetable Bank continued this morning though at a lesser pace. By noon bank officials reported deposits exceeded withdrawals and stability returned note as relief grows for customers.
Liverpool May 3 The British government promises to shield British shipping by subsidy if needed to counter Morgan's proposed shipping trust.
Italian residents of Marseilles anticipate the Grand Franks fete opening tomorrow after months of preparations. The celebration is seen as a diplomatic gesture by France to strengthen ties with Italy, with Italian minister Lucati actively assisting in finalizing arrangements.
Chicago May 3 The bill to restrain meat packers from unlawfully conspiring to fix beef prices has been completed by District Attorney Berthea and Lawyer William A Day Day left for Washington to present the document and affidavit to Attorney General Knox Berthea also departed for New York en route to Washington to attend the conference with the attorney general
The president sent the nomination of Clay Evans to the senate for appointment as consul general at Tonion. May May date not specified. Evans would lead the consular post pending confirmation.
The Marchioness Meadfort formerly Rosie Boote gave birth to a son. The Margale (Meadfort) married the actress in February 1901.
Henry Havemeyer, head of the sugar trust, detailed how beet sugar makers in the Missouri Valley lost market share and customers as the trust set prices below cost. He admitted some Cuban sugar investments by himself but not by his firm, and insisted the company did not advance on Cuban sugar. He warned he would push prices as long as funds lasted to protect American interests.
Special to The Leader reports John Ballile caught a giant rainbow trout near Pillmere ranch in the Big Laramie river. The fish measured 27 inches in length with a 17 inch girth and weighed 10.5 pounds.
Manila May 3 reports say Mindanao grows more threatening as General Davis notes unresolved ultimatum and sentries fired on. American troops shell More fort held by 30 defenders. infantry stormed it with LT Wagner seriously wounded and two officers lightly hurt. twenty seven privates wounded.
The house adjourned at 12 15 today in honor of the late Amos Cummings of New York. A state funeral is set for tomorrow. Cummings, one of the longest serving members of the house, died late last night in a Baltimore hospital.
Victoria B C May 3 The Olympia reports the Kwangs rebels besieging Nan ning with mass killings at Shin Sang and looting. Ma’s Imperial army suffers desertions and heavy losses. In Washington disturbances spread to the south with Imperial troops defeated and a viceroy’s force deployed.
Venice March 3. The United States cruiser San Francisco is scheduled to arrive here shortly. The Chicago could not clear the harbor this morning as she passed out the usual salutes were fired.
Denver reports Paul Leonard was arrested after a 22 caliber rifle accident under the Cherry creek bridge killed Helary Mickey. Leonard says it was an accidental shooting during target practice.
Mrs. Gabrin was arrested in Denver on May 2 charged with poisoning her husband, a Colorado legislator, in January. She pleaded not guilty, offered bail, and appeared in court after a coroner's inquest verdict that arsenic caused death. Det. Carberry led the arrest at 7 pm after locating her at home.
Joseph Wallace an air cart driver and Pat Brannigan a butler are under arrest in New York for stealing jewelry valued at 25 000 from Henry Steere bank president Brannigan has confessed police recovered some jewelry from Wallace in the case with authorities pursuing further charges and evidence
Special to Leader from Rawlins Wyoming May 3 Whyte the horse thief sought by Carbon county for stealing a horse at Separation north of Rawlins was arrested in Denver yesterday afternoon and will be brought back to answer. He had recently borrowed a dress suit from an attorney in Laramie and pawned it. He then stole a horse at Separation and sold it in Rawlins before fleeing as detectives pursued him a shot was fired near his head.
May Enlarge Keefe Hall explains he will remain a Cheyenne resident though away for a year or more for business. He plans to concentrate outside interests and enlarge Keefe hall with a north side extension for stores or offices, decision pending.
John Cahill of Cheyenne and John Fitzpatrick face trial in Laramie for the murder of express robber William Warriss at Buford station two weeks ago. They waived plea and witnesses begin testifying. William Diamond, Warriss’s companion, described the shooting with about a dozen shots fired and he discarded his gun after finding it useless.
In Annapolis the president awarded diplomas after the address at the Naval Academy ceremony. Cadet Emory Land of Wyoming, resting in hospital, received his diploma in bed with the president offering well wishes for a swift recovery. Land, who stood sixth in the class, also received a sword for athletic contributions.
After a burglary, Sheriff Smalley departed this afternoon for Denver to retrieve the man arrested there for robbing the Arp and Hammonds store, bringing him back to face local charges.
Mrs Julius Wellnitz learns of the death of her sister Mrs W C Wampler in Joliet. The notice reports a sad loss and lists the immediate family connection.

Mrs Andrew McAjdam returned from Denver after medical treatment. Mrs George Hunt returned from a Laramie visit with sisters Mrs Oviatt and Mrs Campbell. Corlatt Downey of Laramie witnessed the Frawley company production and then returned west.
City of Cheyenne Wyoming invites sealed proposals for stone crosswalk construction per plan specifications. Bids due May 6 1902 at 8 o clock with $25 bid bond cash or check. Successful bidder must enter contract and furnish bond approved by city council. The city reserves right to reject any or all bids.
