Hardwoods in British Columbia Use and Trends

Hardwoods in BC are mainly interior Aspen Cottonwood and Birch with Alder on the coast. They represent about 6 percent of interior mature timber and 4 percent of mature forests overall but under 2 percent of log production in 1989. New tech for pulp paper and particle board boosts hardwood use including an oriented strand board plant in Dawson Creek and plans at Fibreco Pulp Mill Taylor. Export of Alder chips to offshore pulp mills and chopsticks for Japan are noted.
