Quintette Coal Warns of Layoffs If Rail Strike Persists
Quintette Coal Limited warned on September 13 that if rail shipments from Tumbler Ridge do not resume within a week the company will begin phasing out production and temporarily lay off workers on September 20. President Paul Kostuik said continued strike would halt all production at the northeast B C metallurgical coal operation, affecting about 1,450 employees. The firm ships 400,000 tonnes monthly to the Japanese steel industry via the Richards Terminal. Government action urged to end the dispute.
