Gwillim Lake Centre built for outdoor education progress
The late 1970s saw School District 59 and Pat O'Reilly push a project creating Gwillim Lake Centre near Chetwynd. The site supports pond and soil studies, flora and fauna, map and compass work, canoe physics, and outdoor art. It serves about 1400 students yearly, with cabins, a larger central building, kitchens, sauna, and outdoor facilities. Safety is emphasized and a 100 percent safety record is noted. The center aims to extend learning beyond classrooms and embodies Thoreau's wilderness sentiment.
