Chamber fears mill rate shift burdens BC businesses
The B C Chamber of Commerce warns the new variable mill rate system may shift more of the property tax load from homeowners to business properties. Delegates from Kamloops and other cities urged a thorough review of changes, fearing local governments will take mill rate setting from the BC Assessment Authority. The meeting also backed ending the Crowsnest Pass grain-hauling railway rate.

Mild dry winter sparks early BC fire season
A mild dry winter followed by a hot spring in northern and interior British Columbia has burned about 4,000 hectares of timber. Fire protection officers say the season is ahead of normal, with 103 fires still burning and human carelessness blamed for 87 of them. Firefighters, air tankers, and helicopters are deployed province wide as dry conditions persist and authorities urge extreme caution and immediate reporting of fires via Zenith 5555.
