Preparations are underway for Frontier Days with a June 9 to 12 program including a parade rodeo and dances. Proceeds mostly benefit a Fetal Heart Monitor. Valerie Lord Band to perform at the Recreation Centre dance hosted by the Elks Club.
A Sunday PEP training exercise led by Capt. W Neldehaus of 440 Squadron Edmonton will occur at Chetwynd Airport Terminal with sessions for pilots navigators and spotters. Quintette Coal workers vote 347 for International Union of Operating Engineers and 142 for United Steelworkers.
The 1983 budget was approved May 16 with revenue and expenditures at 3,192,892 each. Key allocations include General Government Services 159,893, Fire Department 66,021, street repair 356,646, environmental and recreational services, debt charges, and capital funds. A five year capital plan 1983 to 1987 also passed, with 1983 capital costs estimated at 983,307 and main 1983 outlays for an office building and water infrastructure, supported by a 2,427,500 borrowing plan.
District Council received a report from Recreational Softball League Chair Doug Fleming noting 20 teams already registered for recreational slowpitch plus five men’s slowpitch six women’s fastpitch two men’s fastpitch one South Peace League and 12 Little League squads. About 600 people will play ball this summer though only six playable fields exist. council will assist by preparing new fields if teams join work bees.
At the May 17 meeting the District Council debated a $135.84 bill from Chetwynd and Area Resource Development Commission. Some members questioned district liability. a motion to pay the bill passed with conditions: no future payments after May 1, change C A R D listing to Industrial Development Officer, and a C A R D member meeting to justify calls. Alderman Schmok opposed, noting no council sanction for the charges.
The District of Chetwynd sets aside 15000 for an Economic Development Officer in 1983 with a 25000 government grant pending. Alderman Hoover Shirley and Mayor Lasser named to hire and monitor the officer. Council also weighs post office hours and reacts to hazardous road issues from Cantor Burt McGraw and Tony Markle. Fire Chief Bob McNabb resigns for personal reasons and dog control reports show seven dogs picked up in April with most destroyed or adopted.
Information service urged over 100 travel information centres across British Columbia will receive grants up to 1000 dollars from the tourism ministry to aid operating costs for the upcoming tourist season. Minister Claude Richmond announced the Tourism Expo 86 statement stressing the need for accurate personalized information to boost BC tourism. The ministry oversees 11 travel information centres and some 122 community centres, with grants to regional tours associations shaping allocations based on staff hours and facilities.
