Fire hazard high as fires burn across Dawson Creek area
The Dawson Creek Forest Department reports 15 fires last week with 13 still burning on Monday. Dun fire near Hart Highway sprawls 1500 hectares, Cold Fire 300 hectares southwest. Last week 122 workers, 25 cats, 6 helicopters. Monday 82 workers, 6 cats, 2 helicopters, 5 skidders. Camp fire ban remains. no burning permits issued.

Campfire Ban Expands Across Prince George Region
Due to extreme fire danger in the northeast third of the province a region wide campfire ban is in effect in the Prince George Forest Region starting midnight May 30 and continuing until further notice. The ban covers Endako to the west Alberta border and south to McBride and Valemount up to the Sikanni River in the north. Liard and Hay River watersheds of the Fort Nelson Forest District are excluded. No person may ignite a campfire during the ban.

Students hired for summer in Chetwynd under federal program
Four projects approved under the Summer Canada Student Employment Program for Chetwynd, funded by the Federal Government, with 122 jobs and 39 projects planned across Mackenzie Fort Nelson Chetwynd Hudsons Hope Fort St John and Dawson Creek. Chetwynd projects include tourist booth wildlife research playground supervision library work and camping society staffing. Fire ban advised for several areas with contact numbers for reporting fires and suspicious smoke.

The Chetwynd Lions Club marked its 9th annual Charter Night and the Lioness Club its 3rd on June 4 1983 at Lions Community Hall with special guests Zone Al Chairman Bob Scales and Ft. St. John President Jim Carter. John Jackman welcomed guests as Mayor Charles Lasser offered civic greetings. Lasser acknowledged original charter members John Jackman Robert Manly Auguste Rohel and Charles Lasser along with widows Bunne Hoffman Elsie Waters and Mary Wilson. Appreciation awards were presented by President Bill Waters to Lions for invaluable service.

A May 20 to June 4 seat belt blitz in Chetwynd fined 40 drivers. Constable Alan estimated 1 in 15 stopped were not belted, with fines starting at 25. The campaign aimed to raise British Columbia belt use to 80 percent, with Chetwynd reaching about 90 percent so far. full BC results pending.
