Canada wins WTO ruling over US softwood duties
Victoria BC officials welcome a WTO finding that the Byrd amendment allowing U S duties to be funneled to American industries breaches trade rules. Forest Minister Mike de Jong cautions the ruling may not quickly change the impasse and urges Ottawa to reveal an aid plan, as thousands of forestry workers face job losses. Canada exports about $10 billion in softwood to the United States, with British Columbia supplying half.
