Garbage draws nuisance bear in Pinewood Trailer Park

Chetwynd RCMP dealt with a nuisance black bear that raided garbage in Pinewood Trailer Park on July 16. Officers tried to scare it away four to five times before the bear was put down after 4:00 pm due to danger to residents. RCMP note bears are attracted to garbage and urge proper disposal, bear proof containers, closed lids, and double bagging of waste, with the District of Chetwynd cleaning up exposed areas.

Chetwynd Wins Circuit Court Deal With Province

Karen Kwan reports Chetwynd secures a $10,000 per year circuit court arrangement with British Columbia to retain court services starting in August. The plan keeps court access in a town of 3,000, with registry staff eliminated, as five small BC communities receive circuit courts amid 24 permanent courthouse closures. Mayor Charlie Lasser notes reduced access but avoids travel to Dawson Creek 100 kilometres away. The payment will be split among the municipality, local native bands, and the regional district, with the province saving about $150,000. The move follows the prior preservation of Chetwynd Hospital and its acute-care beds.
