Post Office management to take more responsibility in new structure

Ottawa CP reports President Michael Warren says the Post Office Crown corporation will place greater accountability on management within six months, with performance judged by service improvements and staff relations. He notes past divisions caused blurred authority as payroll bargaining and purchasing were centralized. Local Christmas mail delivery rose 82 percent in December, with Edmonton and Vancouver showing mixed results.

Surprise rate drop in Canada eases lending pressures

In Ottawa the Bank of Canada reduced its trend-setting rate to 14.74 percent from 14.87 percent, aligning with a level set two weeks earlier. The move, while welcome for borrowers, does not promise broader rate relief as U.S. rate shifts previously feared could spill over. Mortgage costs rise as lenders respond to depositors expectations of higher future rates, with terms near 18 to 19.5 percent.
