Peace area livestock producers face a serious hay shortage after last summer’s low yields and record cold weather increasing feed consumption. Some have run out of hay completely while others struggle to find sufficient forage amid shrinking inventories and rising prices.
Mr Dave Griffeth, general manager, announced the board approved a 16 percent dividend on member shares for the year ended December 31 1981, the largest payout to date. A 5 percent patronage refund on regular member loan interest was also approved, reflecting improved earnings despite high rates. The Dawson Creek and Chetwynd area will share the $406 000 distribution as the credit union reports a 73 percent earnings rise from 1980 to 1981.
5440 Cable Ltd announces stereo FM service now available to subscribers in Dawson Creek Fort St John and Mackenzie with live from Vancouver Victoria and Prince George. Stations include CFOX CFMS CHQM CIOI and CEO. Installation fee $15 no monthly charge increase. Scouts award presented to Bobbie Larsen for 25 years service with Ted Williams officiating.
The Women’s Resource Center in Chetwynd officially opened on February 22 1982 as a umbrella for local women’s groups. The council began as Take a Break meeting in church basements and now runs programs, babysitting, workshops, and newsletters with volunteers led by coordinator Margaret Cissell.
Vancouver CP reports BC Railway workers blame a CN maintenance contract for trains carrying northeast BC coal. Norm Farley of the Council of Trade Unions says more than 1000 laborers are laid off, and CN will service the fleet at Prince George, with jobs staying in BC though transferred to federal crews.
