Canadians largely unaware of proposed civilian spy agency poll

A Gallup poll found 61 percent of Canadians unaware of a plan to create the Canadian Security Intelligence Agency. Ten percent favored the agency while 24 percent opposed. The proposed agency would take over RCMP security duties and wield warrants for wiretaps, mail openings, and forced entries when approved by a federal judge. The survey of 1,062 people has a four point margin of error.

Alberta delays hospital user fees to January 1

Alberta's plan to introduce hospital user fees is pushed back from October 1 to January 1. Hospitals Minister Dave Russell defended the policy amid opposition from federal Health Minister Monique Begin and a recent poll showing public doubt. He cited budgeting complexities and a $6 million available for legitimate hospital appeals as reasons for the delay. Notley criticized the move as potentially a retreat under pressure, calling the minister's explanation implausible.
