The April 1 tax hike follows the March 1981 budget plan to index provincial rates to the Vancouver CPI. Quarterly reviews set new gasoline tax changes, with a 3.74 cent subsidy on marked gasoline for eligible farmers and a 4.18 cent subsidy on marked diesel. Handicapped rebates remain the full tax amount. The next review is July 1, 1983.
Premier William R. Bennett opened the Terry Fox Laboratory at the B C Cancer Research Centre in Vancouver on April 13 with a personal presence by Terry Fox. The ceremony marked a $1 million provincial grant to the Cancer Control Agency and a dedication by the British Columbia Cancer Foundation to the study space. Additional funding came from further grants supporting the unit.
