17th Chanute Fall Festival Opens With Gala Acts

The 17th annual Chanute Fall Festival begins Thursday with a free talent show hosted by Johnny LeRoy. Eleven acts are set, with a goal of 15 to 20. prizes total 25 15 and two 5 gift certificates, judges unnamed. Attached parades, bands, and floats promise a full two hour program.

Three Arrested After $1 000 Bills Spark Curiosity

In Wichita police custody are Richard Baker 22 from Houston Ray Burns 29 and Clyde Breeden 21 of Hutchinson connected to a Houston street robbery that netted 7500 dollars. Victim Ronald Chesterfield 48 a Peoria Illinois area punch press operator carried seven 1000 bills and about 500 in other cash.

Search Is On For Lopeman Missing Chanute Meter Reader

Authorities in Chanute search rural areas in all directions for Wayne F. Lopeman a 44 year old city meter reader missing since 11 am Sunday. Police Chief Lige Matlock said a National Guard plane would help this afternoon as relatives and friends are contacted and checked. Lopeman left home in the family 1950 Buick and has not been seen since. No trace of the car has been found.

Car Truck Crash Causes Extensive Damage Near Chanute

A 1959 Chevrolet driven by 18 year old Joe Martin Thompson of Elsmore R 1 collided with a Santa Fe trails truck at the K39 US 75 junction west of Chanute around 3 20 a m. Thompson escaped with minor injuries not treated. The truck, a 1950 International semi trailer, driven by Ray Summey 46 of Wichita, sustained about 50 in damage and Summey was uninjured.

Reward Offered for Animal Killer in Douglas County

A $650 reward is offered for the person who has killed five farm animals in Douglas County since April 29. Sheriff Dale Chappell warns hunters to obtain permission before entering fields. Farmers keep loaded guns ready after a dove hunter near Baldwin was shot, mistaken for the livestock killer.

Phillipsburg Gridster Killed in Car Crash

Phillipsburg Kansas AP reports a Phillipsburg high school football player, 15 year old John Steffens, was killed in a highway crash Monday night. Six other Phillipsburg residents were injured. John Mullen, 19, and Kay Kinter, 15, are in critical condition at Phillipsburg hospital. Steffens’s father, Fred Steffens, is secretary of the Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas Co.

Retail Committee To Meet Tomorrow

A meeting of the Chamber of Commerce retail planning committee is set for 3 p.m. tomorrow at the Silver Grill to discuss merchant activities during the Christmas season including street decorations. Floyd Naff chairs the committee. Also Thursday at 7 a.m. the chamber’s Membership Contact Club will hold a breakfast meeting at the Tioga with noted chairman listed.

Court Overrules New Rate Trial in Shawnee Co

The Shawnee County District Court overruled a new trial motion by the Kansas Corporation Commission in a bid to reconsider a temporary rate increase for Southwestern Bell Telephone. The ruling clears a path for an appeal to the Kansas Supreme Court. a permanent rate decision remains pending. Allen Meyers was named referee to study the record and recommend a finding on the reasonableness of KCC allowed rates while Southwestern Bell seeks a permanent increase.

Vehicles Damaged In Car Truck Crash

A car and a pickup collided at the 1sl Gar field intersection at 5 15 p m yesterday causing extensive damage. The 1955 Pontiac driven by Ewing C Wolfe 23 of 601 W 14th and the 1949 Studebaker half ton driven by Donald L Stith 29 of 102 S Kansas. Damage estimates were 400 for the car and 250 for the truck. Wolfe was with his daughter Chalila 2 who was bumped on the head and shaken up. she was taken to Neosho Memorial Hospital for examination and released.

A Kansas AFL-CIO executive committee endorsed Gov. George Docking for reelection citing vetoes of tax cutting bills and fiscal restraint. James B.
