Science Book Program For Grade Pupils Here
The Chanute elementary schools participate in a national program to distribute 80 illustrated science books to grades one through six. Boxes are repacked mid year and sent to another school, with two new boxes arriving later. The program, funded by the U S government through the AAAS, supports science interest and reading habits in early grades. Books are kept at Murray Hill library for classroom use, with subjects ranging from time and life millions of years ago to space and microbes.

Unusual Car Accident Fatal for Expectant Mother
Mrs. Luther Bailey, 30, died in Ellsworth Kansas when a car rolled backward as she exited to take twins Carol and Carla to school. Coroner cites chest injuries and suffocation. husband was away at work. Sister-in-law and Prochaska neighbors found the body after the car door frame crushed her.

A two truck collision on U S 160 west of Wellington left one driver dead and another injured. The deceased was Jake Wino Grad, 32, Las Cruces New Mexico. The injured driver James Eugene Black 25 Norfolk Nebraska was hospitalized in Wellington. Police said the crash happened as one trailer tried to turn left.

Two Men Fined in Thayer Court for Intoxication and Larceny
Wilbur Chaney and Wayne Matlock of Chanute were fined after pleading guilty to intoxication. Chaney received 100 dollars and 5.20 dollars costs with 10 days in jail suspended on payment. Matlock was fined 50 dollars and 5.20 dollars costs. petty larceny charge dismissed. Police said the alleged theft included a teddy bear, shotgun shells, and a muffler from a locked car.

A fire at Roy Kirkpatrick home destroyed an electric sewing machine burned curtains scorched a television and damaged one wall. The undetermined origin blaze occurred about 4 15 p m yesterday and was put out by the fire department. Kirkpatrick is a fireman member off duty and on call when the fire occurred and he reported to the station after discovering the run.
