Quince Found on Flowering Quince Bush by Mrs Geil
Arthur Geil of 316 S Kansas reports an unusual growth in the area a flowering quince bush in her yard bore a quince fruit today. The fruit resembles an apple and comes from the flowering quince plant which normally flowers only. Mrs Geil who uses quince for honey and preserves notes four to five years of blooms but never fruit before.

Truck Tire Explodes Injures Worker In Kansas City
Clarence Meier a 36 year old from Russell Kansas was in critical condition at the University of Kansas Medical Center after a truck tire gauge an inch in diameter pierced his left eye and drove six inches into his head at a Russell tire store. He was working alone when the accident occurred and was transported by air to the hospital where surgeons removed the gauge.

Holiday Traffic Toll Starts Climbing
Mrs. Robert Root of Wakarusa Kansas died in a Topeka hospital from injuries in an August 25 automobile crash. The Labor Day holiday toll rose as four Marines from Beaufort Maryland died in a head on crash near Warrenton Virginia. A truck collision near Point Pleasant West Virginia killed three occupants. The National Safety Council warned drivers to slow down as 71 million vehicles may be on the road during the three day weekend. The toll could reach 450 fatalities by midnight Monday. Historical records note 1951 Labor Day weekend saw 658 deaths across traffic drownings and accidents, the worst on record at that time. The period ending Monday is projected to surpass prior totals.

Gypsies Cause Patrols and Thefts At Thayer Homecoming
Two incidents linked to a gypsy caravan at Thayer homecoming drew officers to the scene. A Thayer man claimed a $12 fraud. money was returned and the caravan left town. Three tires vanished at Dinty’s tire shop after a noon deal with caravan members. a $21 settlement followed in Coffeyville. Police later questioned the gypsies about the theft and escorted them across the Oklahoma line. An alleged arson attempt and an assault inquiry involved a Chanute operator and a local youth. preliminary hearings and hospital reports followed.
