A truck carrying 32 people believed to be Mexican nationals overturned near Deming New Mexico. At least one person was killed and 31 others hospitalized as the vehicle was said to be en route from Mesa Arizona toward Mexico.
Silas Riddle retires today as a Santa Fe Railroad telegrapher after 50 years of service. He plans farm life with wife Edith on a six mile north of Eric farm. A collection from coworkers funds his purchase of carpenter tools. Riddle began as a telegraph apprentice in 1907 earning $15 monthly, and after long hours, progressed with Santa Fe and a World War I service break. He recalls vast changes in communications and rail traffic since 1915, including the shift from numerous telegraphers to teletype usage. The family includes son Bob in Los Angeles and daughter Mrs. W. J. Rueschenberg in California. He looks to retirement on an 80-acre farm with a fish pond.
A storm front moved into Kansas bringing rain, snow and colder conditions through Saturday. Snow totals reached up to five inches in northwest towns like St Francis and Goodland reported freezing rain. Highs ranged from 39 to 79 across the state with lows from 39 to 54, and moisture amounts varied by location.
Police logged a flood of calls reporting vandalism and mischief overnight. Pranksters scattered park benches road barricades and tires while paint damaged two cars and parts of a porch swing and radio antenna were bent. Youths were detained for questioning and may face charges.

The victims were seven children of Patricia Van Horne and Lorraine Campbell. Fire blocked the only door and caused suffocation. Fireman Bob Knox entered through a window to rescue others.
The National Safety Council reports 3 330 traffic deaths in September nationwide, with 27 140 fatalities in the first nine months of the year. The September figure matches last year, while the nine month total is up 870 from the same period a year ago. The council notes a cautious improvement after earlier increases.
The United Steelworkers appeal to the Supreme Court to overturn a Taft Hartley injunction forcing 500000 strikers back to work for 80 days. Kent Simmons a 14 year old Jasper Missouri carrier for the Carthage Press is honored in Kansas City for saving 91 year old Mrs Ida Murphy whose clothes caught fire from a heater. Simmons beat out the flames with his hands and a newspaper sustaining minor burns himself.
AP report states 1,000 or more feared dead after a sneak hurricane and floods in Colima Mexico. rescue efforts hampered by missing lines and scorpions, with hundreds feared buried in Minatitlan and thousands affected across Manzanillo and nearby towns.
Gov George Docking filed answers in Shawnee County District Court defending his parole powers. Attorney General Anderson seeks to overturn a 1957 law shifting parole authority to the State Board. Docking granted paroles to Anna Mae Borserine and Aubrey Brooks Leigh under the constitution.
A 33 year old woman, Mrs Viola Davis, was killed near Hugoton Kansas after she walked into a sagging high voltage line when a pickup in which she rode snapped a power pole. She was wife of Walter L Davis of Liberal and an oil field firm employee. The accident happened on US 270 about ten miles north of Hugoton as Mr and Mrs Davis were returning from Tribune.
A two day city wide campaign in Joplin Missouri administered 2540 anti polio shots. Shots cost 50 cents each and were offered at 10 schools. The Jasper County Medical Society and Joplin Parent Teacher Association sponsored the drive.
A 3 year old boy Harold Ikenberry of 1318 S Evergreen was struck by a truck at 10 40 a m near his home on 14th street about 100 feet east of Evergreen. He was taken to Neosho Memorial Hospital with severe cuts to head and face but remained conscious. The driver Leroy Davis 115 S Central and the truck owned by Curtis Cleaver R 1 were identified.
Albany AP report notes Dr. Paul Formel of Albany Medical College urges fathers not to use football with their sons to prove fatherhood. He warns that violent exercise is for adolescents and cautions against risky rough play.
