Halloween activities draw hundreds to Chanute events

Chanute youths complete a five day Halloween program with a four feature movie at People's Theater at 7 pm. Free showings funded by the American Legion VFW and Elks include My Dog Buddy Carnival Story and two spook shows Attack of the Giant Leeches and Screaming Skull. A large bonfire in City Park followed a trash pickup. A Main Street street dance featured the Dew Drops band and free merchant refreshments for a Memorial Fund.

Break-in at Old's Grocery Stole 250 Dollars in Cash and Checks

Police report a burglary at Old's Grocery 502 N Grant where between 250 and 300 dollars in cash and checks were taken from a cash register. Entry was gained by breaking the front door glass and releasing a lock. Mrs. N L Old, who lives in the back, heard no disturbance and found the break at about 645 a.m.

Forecast calls for cloudy skies today with showers and thunderstorms and much colder conditions Sunday. A cold front moves in tonight, with possible snow in northwest Kansas. highs near 90s today, lower tonight. AP report from Topeka notes widespread showers this afternoon and a cooler Sunday.

Final Rush To Register For General Election

City Clerk Howard Parsons reported 121 voters registered in the final two hours as the registration books closed for the November 8 general election. Overall 263 registrations occurred across five nights this week, with many long‑inactive voters signing up. Daytime registrations were heavy, and Chanute totals will be finalized next week after book checks.

Foreign Students Attend UNESCO Dinner in Hutton School

A UNESCO dinner in Hutton School attracted about 250 attendees with 105 foreign students from six area colleges and universities. Kansas University and Kansas State College of Pittsburg sent large groups, plus Eneporia State, Coffeyville and Parsons Junior Colleges. Amelia Gomez of Mexico City was the honor guest. students from various nations performed native songs while locals shared meals.

Chanute Girl Crowned Pittsburg State Homecoming Queen

Miss Carolyn L Schelin 19 year old sophomore daughter of Mr and Mrs Harold Schelin Verona Missouri was named Pittsburg State College homecoming queen. Attendants are Darlene Sue and Charlene Sue Crane twins from Kansas City Kansas and Mary E Mayer of Chanute. Homecoming parade and Pittsburg vs Washburn football game scheduled.

Virginia-Carolina Chemical Corporation opens its 37th fertilizer plant in Chanute two miles west of U.S. 169 on 21st Street with a parade at 10 45 a.m and ceremonies starting at 11 30 a.m. More than 3 000 farmers are expected for entertainment, a free lunch, displays and free soil testing.
