Wobbly Takeoff Kills 22 In Toledo Plane Crash

Survivors described sputtering engines and a wobbly takeoff of a chartered C46 carrying 48 people including California Polytechnic football team members. Youth Arrested After Accident In Santa Fe Crash

Richard E. Hazen, 21, of 402 N. Garfield, was arrested about 12:30 a.m. on charges of driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene after sideswiping three cars in the 900 block of South Santa Fe. He posted a $150 bond and was released pending hearing.

Pleads Guilty in Tax Case Linked to Goldfine Secretary

Miss Mildred Paperman 42, secretary to industrialist Bernard Goldfine, pleaded guilty to a federal indictment charging personal income tax evasion. She was fined 12,500 dollars by U.S. District Judge George C. Sweeney.

X Ray Survey of Chests Starts Here Tomorrow

A mobile chest X ray unit begins public screening in Chanute tomorrow at West 14th division highway offices from 1 to 6 pm. The schedule includes Ash Grove plant and Memorial building visits with days listed for November, and emphasizes precautions for good images. The program, free for over 20s, is sponsored by the State Board of Health and local groups with local volunteers assisting.

GM Plans Expansion to Boost 1961 Production

General Motors will invest 1.25 billion dollars in 1961 for plant, machinery, equipment, and tooling in the United States and abroad. Chairman Frederic G. Donner said the plan reflects faith in the US and free world economies and assumes U.S. car sales of seven million units if incomes and confidence rise. He spoke at a luncheon before about 600 business leaders, forecasting a 40 percent rise in cars in use over the next decade.

Boy Killed When Truck Reverses Onto Child

In Jetmore Kansas, six year old Tom Glant was fatally struck by a neighbor’s truck as his father Virgil Glunt stood nearby in shock. The accident occurred when the boy darted behind the vehicle and was run over as Avery Kline backed up. The father was about 30 feet away and unable to intervene.

Open House At New Lincoln Building Attracts 5000 To 6000

Between 5 000 and 6 000 visitors toured the Home Savings Assn. building at Lincoln and Walnut during the weeklong open house which ended Saturday. Robert N. Allen president said refreshments were served and souvenir gifts given. An advance showing had drawn builders bankers and civic officials from across the state.

Melvin Allen Shot During Family Quarrel

Chanute police said Melvin Allen was shot in the right leg by his 17 year old stepson Jim O Neal during a 2 a.m. family quarrel at the apartment on 17 South Highland. Allen was treated and released from Neosho Memorial Hospital. O Neal was not held pending investigation.

A small tornado touched the west edge of El Dorado Saturday causing damage to an overturned house trailer several homes and a filling station. One man sustained a slight injury as sirens warned residents of the storm’s approach.

Injuries Prove Fatal to Boyd Myers 55

Boyd Virgil Myers 55 of Shawnee Kansas died in a Kansas City hospital from injuries from a highway crash near Chanute Oct 22. State patrol reports say his car skidded on K39 seven miles east of Chanute, rolled end over end after losing control. He was treated locally before transfer to Kansas City hospital.

Kansans Vote on Three Constitutional Amendments in November

Kansas voters will decide on three proposed constitutional amendments addressing continuity of government home rule and legislative salaries.
