A moderate earthquake shaken across the Midwest Wednesday night felt in eight states. The tremor lasted 14 minutes on the St. Louis University seismograph, registering 4.5 to 5 on the Richter scale. Experts noted its wide reach and warned a city-centered quake could have caused extensive damage.

Wilkins Charged in Liuzzo Car Shooting Testimony

Gary Thomas Rowe a Klan member turned FBI informer testified that Collie Leroy Wilkins fired six shots into the car carrying Viola Liuzzo and Leroy Moton on U S highway 80 near Selma Alabama last March 25. Rowe said Wilkins urged driver Eugene Thomas to accelerate and that Liuzzo and Moton were killed.

Bids Read on 38 Highway Projects at State Route Letting

About 140 contractors and salesmen attended the State Highway Commission letting in Chanute for 38 projects across divisions three and four. Bids covered U.S. highways 75 54 and 69 and other state roads with certain segments near Altoona Tonoway K47 and Toronto. Low bids included Hixon Lehenbauer For 7.8 miles of U S 75 and The Landscape of Independence for seeding work. Sherwood Construction Co. bid low on grading for U S 54. Fire Fatal in Brooklyn Ridge Home Near Mound City

Mrs. Ola Teagarden, 50, died in a Wednesday night blaze that destroyed her Brookly n Ridge home fifteen miles north of Mound City. Her husband Ray Teagarden in his 70s said he could not reach her after leaving to call for help. Sheriff Bryan Harold of Linn County said the fire began around midnight in a bedroom.
