Mountain Climb on Fuji Ends in Mixed Feelings

Mrs. Eugene Willis, a junior high French teacher at a Tokyo school for dependents of military personnel, recalls a group climb of Mount Fuji. The ascent involved night travel, slippery lava ash, and resting on futons before reaching the 12,395-foot summit at sunrise. Despite hardship, encouragement from Japanese climbers kept them going, and the view from the top was described as pretty but not worth the effort. The Willises, both Chanute school alumni, have four children.
