The ascent involved night travel, slippery lava ash, and resting on futons before reaching the 12,395-foot summit at sunrise. Despite hardship, encouragement from Japanese climbers kept them going, and the view from the top was described as pretty but not worth the effort. The Willises, both Chanute school alumni, have four children.

A Czech attache to the United Nations killed his wife Vera in New York then fled through New Jersey and Pennsylvania in a high speed pursuit.
