In Hot Springs, Undersecretary Roosa told 100 business leaders that U.S. exports must rise by billions of dollars. Despite a gratifying drop in the international payments deficit, experts warn a mild 1963 dip may occur before a recovery, with tax cuts aiding expansion.
A Allegheny Airlines Convair 928 after landing at Bradley Field, stewardess Francoise de Moriere, 29, vanished in a blast of air from a rear door gap. Her body was found 1,500 feet below in a field. A second stewardess, Kathy Lacey, 20, near the lavatory, was knocked but not believed in danger. Investigators from the Civil Aeronautics Board and FAA planned to probe. Passenger Charles Mack 36 of Springfield described the door mishap and the crew’s attempted repairs. A helicopter searched while Robert Swingle of Farmington located the body behind his home after hearing a scream.
President Kennedy calls off the rest of his weekend trip due to a slight cold and plans to return to Washington immediately.
Joel Arnndrew Lowe, 67, a retired Erie farmer, died at Girard hospital after a one car crash 2½ miles east of St. Paul. The 1956 Buick's driver was another Erie resident. investigation ongoing. Lowe, born Oct 29 1895 in Erie, lived most of his life there with stints in California. Survivors include five daughters and two sons, plus several siblings. Pierce Funeral Home of Erie handles arrangements.
An intersection collision at Main and Forest around 12 35 p m yesterday left two cars damaged with no injuries. A 1958 Chevrolet driven by Thomas L Barnes 16 of 605 N Steuben and a 1956 Olds driven by Marilyn Adams 28 of 311 N Grant were involved. Adams car was being towed by H E Lovett 319 N Grant who was pulling it north on Forest while Barnes traveled east on Main. Front damage estimates: Barnes car 200 Adams car 175. A minor accident at 112 W Main around 3 20 p m yesterday involved a 1955 Olds backing into a parked 1955 Chevrolet belonging to Arch Sommers 421 S Kansas.
Hurricane Ella weakened and posed no immediate danger to coastal North Carolina. Winds near 100 mph remained confined to a small area with hurricane force extending up to 75 miles. Offshore seas and tides were higher than normal but hurricane watch was lifted by Friday afternoon.
A cold front crossed Kansas bringing heavy rains to northern regions and sharp cooling. Rain amounts reached up to 4 inches near Stockton with hail up to 1/2 inch reported in several areas. Heaviest precipitation lay north of a Marysville to Hill City to Oakley line while other areas saw lighter totals. Ottawa and Wichita had showers. clearing began in northwest Kansas and spread southeast this afternoon.
In Joplin Missouri a theft ruse backfired as police hunted a car reported stolen for six hours only to find it still in the East Seventh Street block. Mrs. Carl Larson left the key above her visor and later found the vehicle returned by guesswork of a second driver. A second car owned by Tommy Moore faced the same trap and was returned after his call to a repair shop. Larson’s car arrived with its cooling system and radiator completely overhauled.
