The House and Grounds committee at Alcott school planted five dozen tulips along the south building planter. About 6.90 dollars was donated as students earlier brought pennies and nickels. Committee members Jim Walker Ricky Youngberg Terraleen Carnahan and Rickey Ranabarger led the effort with sponsor Mrs. Jean Vaughn guiding the project amid wasps.

Alaska Highway suspension bridge collapses into Peace River
The north span of the Alaska Highway suspension bridge, a four million dollar structure, fell into the Peace River after shale gave way beneath a 25 000 ton anchor block. No injuries were reported though 3000 onlookers watched as a 465 foot section toppled seven hours after engineers warned the anchor was sinking. Traffic of 200 to 300 vehicles a day was rerouted to a downstream ferry ten miles away. The 2200 foot long bridge sits 600 miles north of Vancouver and 40 miles northwest of Dawson Creek, starting point of the highway.

Globemaster Limps 900 Miles to Christchurch
A heavily loaded U S Air Force Globemaster struggled 900 miles back to Christchurch after one engine quit and a second faltered. After six tense hours over water the giant aircraft was two miles from base when the second engine failed. Captain Vincent de Cesare piloted the craft to a safe landing on two motors.

Train collision injures No one as car struck at crossing
Fred Cragg of 817 West Main reported to police that a 1953 Ford he drove was struck on the right rear fender by Santa Fe train 211 at the Main Street crossing around 6 am today. He said wet paving prevented him from stopping in time. Cragg was uninjured and the car is owned by Tabor Motor Co.
