Two Area Drivers Arrested for DWI
Two area men Mervin Leon Gervais of Erie and James Edward Mann of Erie were arrested Saturday on charges of driving while intoxicated and reckless driving. Gervais was stopped on US 169 south of Chanute after following his car from the 1700 block of South Santa Fe. He posted bond and awaits a police court hearing. Mann was arrested at Island Lincoln and held at the city jail pending his police court hearing or bond. Both refused to take a blood alcohol test.

Tragedy in L'Anse as 10 year old girl killed
In L Anse Michigan a 10 year old girl was strangled and her father shot to death Sunday night. Authorities say 16 year old Eugene Paquet killed Lila Lynn Frosland 10. The father Edward Frosland 44 was shot in the back of the head. Paquet admitted the slayings saying I did it but I dont know why.

A house owned by the Carl Aikins family, three miles south of Chanute, burned early yesterday due to suspected faulty wiring. The fire started in the attic, the structure was largely lost, eight children and two adults escaped unharmed, and neighbor Ray Aikins helped.
