Fingers in Picker Leave Farmer With Four Fingers Severed
Clarence Carey, 60, of Gardner Kansas, lost four fingers of his right hand yesterday when his hand was caught in a mechanical corn picker. A pocketknife used to try to free the husk preceded the injury. He walked a quarter mile to a Gardner hospital then to the University of Kansas Medical Center in good condition today. Carey, a civil service employee at Olathe Naval Air Station, had been helping with the corn harvest on the Robert Stockmeyer farm. Stockmeyer said Carey used a pocket knife to remove a corn husk from the machinery when his hand was caught between two rollers.

Non Strikers Return to Work at Perfect Circle Foundry
In New Castle Indiana non strikers returned to resume piston ring production under National Guardsmen protection after riot-related shutdowns. Guardsmen ferried workers in and a skeleton crew of 84 reopened the foundry while 260 workers had been working before the strike. Eight people were wounded in the prior clash as 5 000 sympathizers gathered outside.

Father wounded as son held after Kansas shooting
An 18 year old farm boy Leon Casteel was taken into custody after a shooting that wounded his father Clyde Casteel 38 at a Kansas farm. Deputies found a 22 pistol in the saddle bags and the boy fled on a horse before being found east of El Dorado. No charges were filed immediately.
