Chamber of Commerce directors discussed a public recognition project for local industrial and business firms. A touring and luncheon series may begin next month with a possible firm background contest to boost public awareness of business impact.
Mrs. George Breiner 66 of Norton Kansas was killed in a two car headon collision near Dederick Missouri. Her husband George Breiner a Norton implement dealer and former Norton County Democratic chairman was hospitalized along with Donald Ketterm an Eldorado Springs Missouri resident. Breiner had been a Democratic National Convention delegate in 1960 and served on the Kansas Industrial Development Commission. The couple, en route from St Louis to visit relatives, had relatives in the area including the Breiner families east of Chanute.
Kansas traffic death log shows 24 hour period to 9 am Tuesday October 8 1961 with 405 fatalities for October. Comparable 1960 period recorded 374 deaths.
Fifty years ago in September 1911 The Chanute Tribune featured 18 year old James Butin later known as a physician and long-time Chanute resident. A gifted bird call imitator he trained with Thurlow Lieurance, performed with a band and at the 1915 World’s Fair train concerts, then starred in Chanute’s silent movie theaters and joined Chautauqua circuits for three seasons.

Arch ie Davis a 29 year old Gary Indiana steel worker opened fire during a reprimand on the job killing four foremen and injuring four others before a plant guard shot him in the head ending the rampage. The victims named include Joe Guydon Donald Moran Royal Butt and Neal Wolfrath. Louis Massa survived after being wounded and taken to Mercy Hospital.
The United States today recognized the new Syrian state. The State Department informed the government of Premier Mahmoun al Kuzbari about the diplomatic move.
A preliminary hearing for Felipe Gutierrez of Humboldt on a fourth degree manslaughter charge is scheduled for 2 p.m. October 20 in city court. Gutierrez was arrested after the Tuesday death of Mrs. Wallace Johnson of Chanute, injured in a September 16 traffic crash on 1009 West Main. he was released on $2,500 bond pending the hearing.
The Weather Bureau warned of severe storms capable of one or two tornadoes this afternoon from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. CST. The risk area extends north central and northeastern Oklahoma, southeastern Kansas and extreme west central Missouri along a line from Enid, Oklahoma to Chanute, Kansas.
An unidentified El Dorado youngster turned on a car ignition to listen to the radio, moved the auto in reverse across the street and struck a car owned by Mr and Mrs Reed. The Reed car rammed the duplex wall damaging two apartments. Total damages cited: several hundred dollars to the building, 750 to the Leedy car, 300 to the Reed vehicle.
About 160 officers and delegates from area teachers associations attend a two day zone school in Chanute hosted by the Chanute Teachers Assn. Earl Brandenburg 70 of Russell died from injuries after a crash Monday at a county intersection near Russell involving his pickup and a car. The accident occurred at a rural crossroads and authorities reported Brandenburg succumbed to his injuries.
Dorothy Walker, an American artist in Greece, testified that Roger Ranney stayed with her after claiming to be shipwrecked. She said he showed no urgency to resurface the Delos and a smaller craft near other islands. Ranney faces premeditated homicide charges over the swamping of a motor launch and disappearance of two Greek seamen.
Elizabeth New Jersey police say 21 year old Fred Babish entered the draft board office with a baseball bat on Monday and smashed six windows damaged venetian blinds and chased clerks into the hallway before officers subdued him He claimed a grudge against the board and faces malicious mischief and disorderly conduct charges.
Independence Kansas area officers report the recovery of seven stolen 1960 automobiles in Montgomery and Wilson counties. Cars were stolen in Oklahoma and Kansas with swapped door post serial numbers. hidden serials enable tracking. No arrests yet. FBI and state authorities assisting.
