Traffic Fatalities Reach 500 Mark in 1956
Kansas records show 500 traffic deaths for 1956 with two late weekend reports. Max French, 17, Hutchinson, died in a car crash north of Hutchinson, and Michael Young, 7, Gridley, died in a pedestrian accident. Neither death was reported until now. New Mexico Pair Escapes State Prison
Road blocks formed in eastern New Mexico as two convicted murderers Jimmy Williams 29 and Willy Carpenter 55 escaped by kidnapping guard Jose A Vigil from the near abandoned old state prison. Jet Crashes on City Street as Pilot Bails Out
An Air Force F 86 Sabre jet crashed on a residential street in Mastoutah Illinois sending debris into a home and narrowly missing a 3 year old girl and a babysitter. The pilot 1st Lt Roger Pile from Linden New Jersey bailed out and landed near a coal shed four blocks away. Some rockets aboard the plane exploded after impact.
Plucky five year old loses eye to cancer at Grady
Johnny Pair, blind after the removal of his right eye, underwent a 30 minute operation at Grady Hospital to remove the cancerous eye. Doctors reported the procedure a success and his chances of cure were described as reasonably good. His mother and his father had debated the surgery before the consent was given.
