Jury Box Upgraded at Memorial Building Courtroom

Twelve new oak jury chairs and a witness chair were installed in the district court jury box yesterday by city workers in the Memorial Building. Recreation Plan On Ballot Nov 6 In School District

Voters will decide if the school district adopts a supervised recreational program funded by a one mill tax levy. City officials and the school board moved to place the question on a special election ballot after a petition was found sufficient. The plan, sponsored by the Chanute Community Council, aims for year round programs for fall ages and would raise about 11200 annually. A six jet B47 bomber crashed and exploded about 18 miles southeast of Riverside California. A witness described flames rising about half a mile into the air. Officials at March Air Force Base say they do not know how many crew were aboard the bomber. March is a B47 base.

Purchase of the Western Auto associate store at 108 W. Main from Mr and Mrs Lee Phelps is announced by Mr and Mrs J E Beech moving from Edna. A formal opening under new management is planned for Oct 11 27. Beech also purchased the Phelps home at 309 S Rutter and the Phelps plan to return to Holden Mo. Beech has worked in Labette county soil conservation for eight years and previously for a major oil company.

Dodgers Hold 11-7 Lead In World Series After Six

The Brooklyn Dodgers led 11-7 after six innings in the second World Series game. A Yankee rally began with Slaughter's single Berra's walk and Collins' hit. Berra followed with a grand slam in the second and Hodges scored on Campanella's liner as Furillo Gilliam walked and Reese singled for two more runs.
