Chanute faces a developing water shortage with four to six weeks of supply left behind a low dam and rising hauls. City officials plan an ordinance banning non essential water use as drought extends into 1956, with crops and fish severely affected and rainfall well below average.
Frank Washburn and his sons run a North Santa Fe filling station where a motorist in a foreign licensed car received $20 after Washburn suggested oil and filter changes. The article also notes the National Audubon Society reporting four whooping cranes nearing the area and a sighting by Eunice Nyman near Odense. Only 25 to 30 cranes remain in North America and are protected in all states.
A weak cool front moved through Kansas with no rain prospects. Topeka Kaw River levels fall, 97th of a foot this morning. Forecaster expects 75 to 80 this afternoon with cooler tonight in the east and south, cooler through Friday, highs in the 80s and lows in the lower 50s.

The first event was a team pulling contest at City Park earlier today. Tomorrow features the University of Kansas Jayhawk Jamboree.

Kansas Governor Fred Hall announced an agreement with the U S Department of Agriculture to start a $500 000 emergency hay program for drought stricken farmers. The deal relies on state funds to cover administrative costs and follows a dispute with Attorney General John Anderson over authority to pledge those expenses. Roy Freeland of the State Board of Agriculture said the program could use about $13 000 in unspent funds and that details, including per ton payments around 7 50 for hay, would be worked out as the plan proceeds. Hall said the arrangement does not bind the state to a set amount and declined to reveal a start date while telephoning the Finance Council for approval.
Police investigated a man found down with a head cut at 342 E Main in North Malcolm. Ernest E. Kelsey was located in a room with a broken chair and released after posting a $15 bond on an intoxication charge.

An 11 year old boy is being held by juvenile authorities in Colton California after the drowning of 8 year old George Bryant a polio survivor and poster boy. Lester Stewart a playmate described pushing Bryant into the Santa Ana River wash where he sank. Bryant had appeared on a polio fund campaign poster during treatment at St Helena Hospital.
A cloud seeding program to boost rain in northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas began with a meeting at Central High School in St. Joseph. About 1,200 people from 32 counties heard explanations and reports from areas where the program operates.
The State Highway Commission awarded construction contracts totaling 930000, mostly for county roads and bridges in 20 counties. Bids opened recently at Salina, Hutchinson and Chanute, with several projects included.
Erie city officials at the monthly meeting discussed future water supply and sewerage disposal needs. A low water dam on the Neosho River south of town was considered, with the clerk to gather state guidance on feasibility. Officials will tour new sewage plants to collect construction and operation data for anticipated plant requirements.

New York baseball commissioner Ford Frick postponed the second World Series game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Yankees due to light rain and a threatening forecast. At 11 03 a m after talks with managers Casey Stengel and Walter Alston and the umpires the decision was announced from the Brooklyn dugout at Ebbets Field. The game will be played Friday at Ebbets Field with expected fair weather.

In Jackson Michigan, at least six workers are presumed dead after a four story Consumers Power Co building collapsed. More than 100 inmates from Southern Michigan Prison aided rescue as four bodies were recovered and 15 injured. rescue operations paused due to unstable walls.
Washington reports 655 new polio cases across 47 states last week with Rhode Island silent. Total falls 110 from the prior week and officials anticipate a continuing decline. California led with 74 cases, followed by New York 61 and Illinois 58.
Lyons Kas Emanuel Neubauer 67 dies from encephalitis also called sleeping sickness the only local fatality this year while western Kansas towns report up to ten cases indicating wider spread of the illness.
Oklahoma City officials say the proposed Southwestern Turnpike from Oklahoma City to the Texas line near Wichita Falls cannot be financed at this time. The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority was briefed on the setback today.
A. L. Ricketts of Erie and mechanic Bob Swank face a $50,000 damage suit filed in district court by Bill Sullivan of Hume Missouri. Sullivan alleges he was injured July 23 in the Ricketts garage when Swank tried to start a car in repair, pinning Sullivan’s right leg between bumpers and causing permanent injury and lost wages.
About 100 people attended the semi annual meeting of the Association of County Commissioners and County Engineers of Southeast Kansas at the Memorial building. C H Pruitt presided as Neosho County commissioner. Speakers included W E Allison of the Kansas Highway Commission who spoke on new federal highway legislation. The 17 county meeting ended with a buffet at Tioga Hotel.
The October term docket lists 36 cases for hearings next Wednesday. State actions include ex rel. against Fred Roles and Marie Roles with injunction requests, and Kansas cases against Pauline Jensen for driving while intoxicated and Lonnie Kennedy for grand larceny. Civil suits include 13 divorces, eight judgments, and items covering separate maintenance, quiet title, child support, replevin, foreclosure appeal, and probate appeal.
The Agriculture Department reported by Sept 28 winter wheat farmers had signed 106 485 agreements covering 4 335 555 acres in the soil bank with a deadline looming for participation in the 1957 winter wheat crop. State breakdown lists Kansas Missouri Nebraska Oklahoma with totals and maximum payments.
The Kansas Advisory Hospital Council plans to review applications for portions of a 1 652 984 federal hospital grant to the state.
