90-Year-Old Woman Quits as Librarian

SEDGWICK Kansas AP says Lillian Tear will quit next Tuesday as librarian for the town population 1130. She started in 1924 and served without pay for 17 years saying it was an opportunity to help and she loved every minute of it. She will turn 90 on December 17.

In Wichita a Safeway robbery on South Seneca ended when Sgt. Karl Triplett rammed the getaway car. Patrolman Gary Caldwell pursued, tackled a suspect, and fired a shot as two others fled. One man, Edward H. Smith, 19, of Arlgyle Tex, was captured. About 450 dollars was taken.

Three Guards Die In Bloody Riot At Illinois Prison

A four hour riot at Menard State Prison in Chester Illinois left three guards dead and six injured after convicts used knives from steel bars and a painted thinner bomb. Illinois Public Safety Director Ross Randolph and Warden Max Frye negotiated with four ringleaders who sat hostage guards and surrendered after 300 guards and state troopers surrounded the dining hall.
