Officials say seeping gas ripped through a Keokuk National Guard armory during a Swing Ezy Club square dance, killing seven and injuring about 44 with 30 in critical condition. Survivors recalled a massive blast as investigators seek the gas source and trigger.
Weather system spreads from southern Rockies into northern Plains and Great Lakes with heavy snow and strong winds. Arctic air drops temperatures to near zero in Montana and Dakotas while freezing rain hits southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Regions including Aberdeen and Fargo report over three inches of snow as rain storms in California finally ease after two weeks.
The Chanute Tribune is sent to SM2 Ronald L. Cushman in South Viet Nam through American Legion Auxiliary Unit 170 in Chanute. The project partners with Department of Defense and aims to provide hometown papers to 14 000 Auxiliary units and one million members amid growing requests.

A 37 year old Chanute woman, Mrs. De loris Mereline Bell, died after a one car crash on North Plummer road around 1 30 a m. The other occupant, James H. Bryant, 21, in fair condition at Neosho Memorial Hospital, faces charges pending. Police say Bryant drove northbound, struck the Ash Grove quarry road overpass. The 1962 Pontiac sustained about 1200 in damage. Bell born June 11 1928 in Joplin, survived by three children and two grandchildren. Funeral set for Koch Gibson chapel Monday at 2 p m. Burial Memorial Park cemetery.
Neosho County commissioners push safer roads citing 14 percent of state traffic on county roads and twice the accident rate there. They commended Chanute JayCees for clearing brush after a fatal crash and school bus overturn. The board ordered a brush cutting machine on a motor grader costing 7850 dollars and purchased tractors with brush cut ters to improve conditions on 965 miles of roads.
A Thanksgiving morning blaze in a Norfolk trailer killed three children Audrey 3 Annette 1 and Pamela two months old while their mother spoke briefly with a neighbor. The children's father Joseph E Kelman a Navy fire controlman from Leicester Massachusetts was on ship when the fire started.
Thieves stole priceless ancient works from the Vatican Apostolic Library including manuscripts by Petrarch and Torquato Tasso. Initial value estimates at 200 million lire were dismissed as too low by Vatican sources. The loss, believed to have occurred Thursday night, also included a Torquato Tasso verse book.

A car driven by Ray Colvin struck a deer on US 169 north of town at about 10 15 p.m Wednesday. The deer, a 350 pound buck, ran off after the impact and was found dead by police. Dean Reidesel, state game protector at Erie, picked up the carcass near the Neosho River bridge. Several deer have been hit in the area and no damage estimate to the car was available.
Edward A. Young 50 was charged with first degree murder for the shotgun death of neighbor Stanley Lewis Schnichels 35 in Fort Scott Kansas. Bail set at 50000 preliminary hearing scheduled December 3. Victim's wife Helen witnessed the shooting following a trench dispute over draining waste water and a city sewer requirement. Young has prior armed robbery and burglary convictions dating to 1934.
Kansas honors Evelyn Harper reading and English teacher at Atchison junior and senior high schools as state Teacher of the Year. She joins the Atchison staff since 1947 48 and will be a candidate for 1966 National Teacher of the Year.
