Maryville Woman Killed by Car Near Home
Elizabeth Killam aged 75 was struck and killed when she stepped from a rural mailbox into the path of a car on US 71 just north of Maryville. The vehicle was driven by Mary Elliott, 41, also of Maryville, according to Missouri Highway Patrol reports.

Chanute Trio Sentenced in Burglary Plea Deal
Three Chanute men Wilbur Chaney Wayne Matlock and Bennie E Vance pleaded guilty to second degree burglary and related larceny charges in district court. Chaney and Matlock received five to ten year terms at Lansing state penitentiary while Vance got concurrent five to ten year burglary terms and five years for larceny at Hutchinson. Parole was denied. Vance arrested November 16 for break in at Rubow's Market and Caldwell and Son Furniture with resulting merchandise and cash losses.

Murder Charge Filed in Downtown Shooting Case
Leo Cherry, 22, is charged with first degree murder in the shooting death of Clifford Crawford, 22, outside a Hutchinson tavern Monday night. Crawford’s expectant wife witnessed the killing. Cherry was arraigned in district court Tuesday and said he acted in self defense after a quarrel.

Identification Made In Bridge Death
A Topeka man who apparently fell to his death from the Rock Island bridge over the Kaw River has been identified as Elmer Leslie Jett 56 of Atchison Kaw. The body was found on the river bank below the bridge by a railroad switchman Friday and the identification was made Tuesday through fingerprints. Jett, an itinerant laborer, had been discharged from Topeka State Hospital about a year ago.
